Former Disco Elysium Developers Have Established Three Different Independent RPG Studios

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that this recent development in the gaming industry is nothing short of a gold rush for RPG enthusiasts like myself! The fact that former Disco Elysium developers have not one, not two, but three new independent studios working on RPG projects is simply mind-boggling.

A group of developers previously associated with Disco Elysium, now working at ZA/UM, have launched not just one or two, but three separate independent game development studios. All these newly-formed studios were announced simultaneously, with each studio confirmed to be focusing on role-playing games (RPGs).

Initially, we have Dark Math Games, a team consisting of around 20 members, with approximately 10 of them being involved in the creation of Disco Elysium. At present, this studio is engaged in developing a detective RPG named XXX Nightshift, which is under production for PC.

Located at an Antarctic off-season vacation spot, “XXX Nightshift” will prioritize decision-making and repercussions, a sophisticated interactive friend system, and exclusive detective features and mechanics. Take a look at the game’s announcement trailer below, which offers peeks into dialogue-centric gameplay segments.

According to Timo Albert, co-founder, art director, and strategic lead at Dark Math Games, we’re not just enhancing the conventional RPG mechanics; we’re also introducing something new and exciting to the gameplay experience. Translation: Expect a fresh take with lots of added fun!

Additionally, we have Longdue – a fresh studio established by ex-developers from Disco Elysium and veterans who’ve worked at Bungie, Rockstar Games, and other notable studios. This team has successfully acquired funding to work on their inaugural project, which they refer to as an RPG with rich narrative depth that explores psychogeography.

At Longdue, our creativity stems from the rich heritage of role-playing games dating back decades, including gems like Ultima, Wizardry, Fallout, Planescape, and the critically acclaimed Disco Elysium. We’re thrilled to carry on this legacy by creating another narrative-driven, psychologically focused RPG. Our aim is to make a game where the relationship between inner minds and external environments forms the core of the player’s experience. We’re assembling an elite team to develop an exceptional game with a compelling storyline, and we can hardly wait to share more details with you.

Last to be mentioned, but certainly not least, we have Summer Eternal – a fresh, independent studio that has been coined both an “art collective” and an “RPG studio”. This innovative studio was established by a group of seasoned professionals who previously worked on the game Disco Elysium. Among these talented individuals are writers Argo Tuulik, Dora Klindzic, and Olga Moskvina; concept artist Anastasia Ivanova; voice actor Lenval Brown; and graphic designer Michael Oswell.

Co-founder Argo Tuulik expresses that they created something groundbreaking, transcending traditional boundaries, and entirely novel in their previous endeavor. He’s unwilling to abandon that vision. The knowledge gained, skills honed, and experiences forged over the past five years have been waiting for an opportunity to be applied. Consequently, they went back to the design phase with a clear objective: let’s begin afresh, aiming to avoid repeating mistakes from the past, particularly when the race commences. This time around, they want to ensure that their actions reflect positively on humanity as a whole.
