As a fervent admirer of music, I have long been captivated by the enigmatic allure of R&B and hip-hop stars like R. Kelly. However, watching the unraveling of his career and the harrowing stories emerging from his victims has left me profoundly disheartened.

R. Kelly‘s estranged daughter is speaking out about a traumatic experience.
Joann Kelly, better known as Buku Abi, claims in a recent documentary that R&B singer, currently serving a 30-year prison term for sexual offenses against underage girls aged between 12 and 17, sexually abused her when she was approximately eight or nine years old.
She emotionally shared in the two-part TVEI Network documentary titled “Karma: A Daughter’s Journey,” as reported by People, that she recalled awakening to find him touching her. Unsure of what to do, she simply remained still and feigned sleep.
Mr. Kelly firmly refutes these accusations, as stated by his lawyer Jennifer Bonjean in a declaration to People magazine. Previously, his ex-wife had made similar claims, which were then examined by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and found to be baseless.

In the October 11th documentary, Joann described sharing information about the suspected abuse with her mother Andrea Kelly in 2009, when she was just 10 years old. Despite submitting a complaint to the police using the pseudonym “Jane Doe,” no charges were ultimately brought forward.
2014 saw Andrea submitting legal documents requesting full custody over Joann, Jaah, and Robert – her children with R. Kelly. In this filing, she claimed that the artist had allegedly abused a minor girl in 2009. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services had previously investigated these accusations, but they were ultimately determined to be baseless, as reported by Chicago radio station WBEZ in 2020.
It was stated that the motion, previously sealed in that year due to the outlet’s legal initiatives, indicated that the DCFS caseworker informed Jane Doe’s mother that while the caseworker suspected the incidents, they were obligated to rule the situation as unsubstantiated.
Ahead of the doc’s release, TVEI had previewed Joann emotionally recounting part of her story.

In 2021, R. Kelly was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking charges and received a sentence of 30 years in prison. A year later, in 2022, he was convicted again for child pornography and soliciting minors for sexual purposes, resulting in another 20-year prison term. On October 7th, news outlets reported that the U.S. Supreme Court chose not to consider an appeal filed by the singer regarding his second conviction.
The 57-year-old individual is currently serving out the combined 19-year term from both sentences at the same time, with a projected release date in 2045.
Following the airing of the six-part Lifetime documentary titled Surviving R. Kelly, which detailed numerous allegations of abuse made by women against R. Kelly, a number of his previous musical associates and colleagues in the industry have publicly expressed their disapproval of him.
Regarding the accusations of abuse and misconduct against R. Kelly, he has continually maintained his innocence and hasn’t been found guilty in a court of law for crimes related to these allegations. However, he has yet to respond publicly to the following comments about him.
On January 9th, the popular musician, known for their collaboration with R. Kelly on the song “Do What You Want” in 2013, declared that they intend to remove this track from platforms like iTunes and streaming services altogether.
In part, she stated, ‘The accusations against R. Kelly are utterly shocking and beyond justification. As a survivor of sexual assault, I produced the song and video during a difficult period in my life. My aim was to create something fiercely rebellious and provocative because I was enraged and hadn’t yet come to terms with the trauma I experienced. It’s evident how warped my mindset was at that time.’

On January 3rd, I took to Twitter and expressed my sentiments, stating, “To those praising me for my courage in appearing in the doc, it didn’t feel daring at all. I stand by these women and could not care less about shielding a serial child predator. The decision was effortless.
On January 11th, the supermodel disclosed that she lost approximately 50,000 Instagram followers after speaking out against R. Kelly. In her post, she wrote, “I have long been taught to avoid conflicts whenever possible, which has led me to remain silent for much of my life. Silence leads to stagnation and stagnation leads to illness. No longer! Farewell to silence and backward-thinking followers, welcome to confrontation and progressive thinkers… #SilenceIsNotGolden.
The hip-hop artist referred to their 2015 collaboration as a “misstep” in a recording broadcasted on Surviving R. Kelly. In addition, they expressed an apology on January 5th via Twitter, saying, “I apologize to all his survivors for collaborating with him and for remaining silent for too long.
On January 9th, the actress famously known as the “Scream Queen” voiced her criticism of R. Kelly on various social media platforms in a lengthy statement. In this statement, she referred to herself as a past pupil of R. Kelly’s. She expressed her dismay and sorrow by stating that although God bestowed grace upon R. Kelly to overcome his shortcomings from childhood, he has dishonored God through his actions towards the women involved. Instead of being a source of blessing for these women, she asserted that R. Kelly repeatedly exploited them, which she cannot condone.
On January 6th, R&B artist Omarion shared on Twitter that he intends to stop performing collaborations with R. Kelly, such as “Bump, Bump, Bump” and “What a Girl Wants”. He further stated, “His extraordinary talent influenced us all. His music is being silenced by the shadows of his actions. The darkness surrounding him will eventually be exposed.
On January 5th, the artist openly expressed her ardent admiration for R. Kelly on a series of tweets and admitted that she might have been one of his potential victims during the early stages of her career. She further conveyed her deep empathy towards these brave women who speak up against such predators, some risking their lives to share their stories. She also acknowledged that standing up against powerful individuals or entities can be incredibly daunting and terrifying.
The R&B singer spoke out in support of the #MuteRKelly hashtag, writing on Instagram, “There is NO excuse. Music is important. It really is. But it’s not more important than protecting our children, protecting our little girls. PERIOD.”
