Rarely does an actor secure two legendary roles throughout their acting journey. However, by the age of 20, Melissa Joan Hart had already graced our screens with performances in two groundbreaking television series.
Initially, Hart portrayed the lead character in the TV series titled Clarissa Explains It All, which aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 until 1994. After five years had passed, she was cast as the main character once more in another show: Sabrina The Teenage Witch.
Following her initial role as the Archie Comics witch in a 1996 film, 48-year-old Hart has been casting spells and causing mischief on ABC and later the WB for seven seasons, until the popular series concluded in 2003.
Yet, despite initially appearing uncertain about landing the enchanting role, it seemed that the star’s mother was among the producers. This uncertainty stemmed from a few factors, with one reason being that Hard was contemplating her departure from acting at that particular moment.

He explained that often, people achieve success for one project but find it difficult to secure further work after that. Hart never anticipated his career would span a lifetime.

In her conversation with Glamour, she shared, “I merely considered myself fortunate to have a show, Clarissa, and assumed that college would guide me towards my future profession.
Shirley Temple was a significant inspiration for me,” she went on to say. “She later became an ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, involved herself in politics, and raised her family. She retired at 20, which made me think I would too. However, my career didn’t stop after that as ‘Sabrina’ took off.

Paula played a crucial role as the executive producer throughout all seven seasons, handling tasks such as hiring and firing, managing the music, and overseeing editing – essentially taking care of everything related to production. This way, Hart said, he didn’t have to worry about what was coming next, as Paula was responsible for planning those aspects.
4. In the 1996 TV movie, Charlene Fernetz portrayed Aunt Zelda, while Sherry Miller played Aunt Hilda. However, when it transitioned into a TV series, Beth Broderick took over from Fernetz as Aunt Zelda, and Caroline Rhea replaced Miller as Aunt Hilda Spellman.
5. In the movie, the family’s surname was Sawyer, however, it was changed back to Spellman – as it is in the comic books – for the television show on ABC.

Following a deception towards Britney Spears’ bodyguard, they journeyed to Club Cherry in Los Angeles. We managed to slip inside through the back entrance. Once we were within, Britney became engulfed by the crowd and I lost sight of her, as Hart detailed. At the end of the evening, I located her in a private booth surrounded by numerous individuals showering her with affection. This was a moment she had worked tirelessly for and relished in the attention…Ever since then, Britney has been sneaked through more back doors than I can recall, but it chills me to think that I may have initiated this pattern of behavior for her.
8. Hart also shared her experiences of socializing with Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, having formed a friendship with them following ‘N Sync’s guest appearance on the show back in 1999.
“No travel memory, however, compares to when ‘N Sync…asked me to join them in Turks and Caicos at the end of their 2001 summer tour,” Hart wrote. “In the Caribbean, we had a great time sipping fruity drinks and partying with some other celebrities like Tori Spelling and Olympic medalist Tara Lipinski.”
9. However, there was one celebrity from that period with whom she didn’t want to socialize. Hart confessed that she and Ashton Kutcher, who was appearing on That ’70s Show during that time, didn’t see eye to eye, and she had attempted to eject him from her parties on two occasions due to his smart-aleck comments.
10. One actor Hart particularly got along with was none other than Ryan Reynolds, whom she crossed paths with during the production of the 1996 movie. Hart clarified, “We had various cats for diverse purposes. For instance, we had one agile feline for jumping, another gentle one for cuddling, another playful one for chasing a ball of yarn, and several others as backups.
However, these genuine cats weren’t always the easiest to work with on set. The leading actor commented, “They are fed before they start, so they’re hungry initially, but once they fill up, they become less cooperative. They won’t comply with what you want them to do after that. They aren’t like dogs. Their indifference is evident.
15. During the initial season, Michelle Beaudoin portrayed Sabrina’s friend Jenny Kelly, but she didn’t reappear in subsequent episodes, leaving the reason for her absence unexplained back then.
Hart reminisced during his 2016 interview with the Huffington Post, “Indeed, Jenny,” he said. “Each season, our show’s cast would change due to audience feedback and sometimes contract disputes regarding actor compensation. This allowed us to introduce new viewpoints through different characters.
16. Throughout its seven-year span, the series Sabrina underwent numerous significant cast changes. Prior to season four, actors such as Martin Mull, Lindsay Sloane, and Jenna Leigh Greene decided to leave. In season five, Soleil Moon Frye and Elisa Donovan joined the cast, portraying Sabrina’s college friends.
In simpler terms, Hart explained that the show has a high turnover rate due to complex political maneuvers behind the scenes. He gave an example where a writer creates and is compensated based on the character they develop for each episode. If the writer leaves and there’s bad blood, the character they developed might be eliminated to avoid further payments to them. Many factors play a role in such situations.
17. In her 2018 memoir titled “Just the Funny Parts”, Sabrina’s first showrunner, Nell Scovell, disclosed that the network head had suggested a significant alteration for the pilot script. The idea was to introduce conflict by having one of the aunts object to Sabrina living with them, in an attempt to create tension between Zelda and Hilda.
I mused aloud, ‘It feels so melancholic. Sabrina is just a young girl, away from her parents and not welcome with her aunts. How can we find humor in this situation?'” Scovell persisted with this thought, eventually persuading them to maintain the original dynamic as she had envisioned it.

Scovell also pondered over the series’ lack of diversity, as she had shared that her agents had proposed the role of Aunt Zelda to the iconic actress Cicely Tyson. “I should have seized the opportunity. Instead, I argued that we were focusing on Caroline Rhea and it wouldn’t be fitting for the two to be sisters,” she admitted, to which her agent responded, “It’s a realm of magic. Perhaps one sister could be African-American.
Scovell admitted, “It would have been an interesting and bold move, but I didn’t pursue the idea.”
19. As the series prepared for its seventh and last season, it became clear that it might be canceled, given that The WB had commissioned only 13 episodes instead of the standard 22.
Hart expressed his feelings to TV Guide Online when they received a reduced episode order by saying, “It’s not the best treatment for a series as established as ours, but it’s something that occurs frequently.
Later on, Hart expressed his belief that the WB was indifferent towards the series since it had originated from ABC. He stated, “No one there champions our show, no one there is genuinely backing it or taking a significant risk for it.
20. In the last season, Broderick and Rhea didn’t regularly appear, as the storyline centered around Sabrina balancing her adult life with a job at a magazine.
