Doctor Who’s Paul McGann “waited for a phone call” when series returned with Christopher Eccleston

As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and intrigue when it comes to the enigmatic Paul McGann and his long-standing association with Doctor Who. The revelation that he has never met or spoken to Russell T Davies is as surprising as the TARDIS itself materializing out of thin air!

Approximately two decades have passed since Russell T Davies brought back Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston portraying the Ninth Doctor, marking a fresh start that was followed by nearly a decade since Paul McGann played the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 television film.

After that point, Davies departed from the show, later came back, and currently leads the series during its latest phase.

McGann reappeared in the series, often in Big Finish audio dramas and occasionally on-screen during the tenures of showrunners Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall.

Despite the contrary belief, it’s been disclosed that McGann has never interacted with Davies personally, nor had any conversations with him. Interestingly, when Doctor Who was rebooted in 2005, McGann was anticipating a call asking him to briefly join the series.

In the most recent Doctor Who Magazine, India Fisher (a co-star of McCann in Big Finish productions) recalled receiving an email from showrunner Russell T Davies stating, “Thank you so much. Without the character of Charley, Rose Tyler would not have existed.

“And I was like, ‘That’s lovely. Do you want to cast me, then?’”

McGann replied: “At least there was an email. That’s more interaction I’ve ever had with him compared to none before!

He went on to say: “Never met him, never spoken to him, never had an email. I mean, I admire him greatly, but no. I’ve never met him.”

Regarding his first response upon learning about the 2005 revival of the show, he stated: “Well, I figured that since no one had contacted me yet, there was a possibility the phone might ring with an invitation for me to appear for just one day on this project. But it didn’t!” He chuckled.

Isn’t it just like a melancholic actor, really? Actors, when not on set, tend to spend their time sitting in a room, gazing out of a window, hoping the phone will eventually ring. That was my situation for quite some time, and alas, the phone never did.

Previously, McGann mentioned his desire to rejoin the TV series, stating: “I’ve recently appeared in one of Jodie Whittaker’s episodes (The Power of the Doctor). That was the only time the Eighth Doctor appeared on television. It sparked a small craving for more. I wouldn’t object to doing some additional scenes.

Towards the end of last year, there were rumors circulating about a new show centered around McGann being developed. But if McGann’s communication with Davies hasn’t been as frequent as he claims, it appears that this project might not be moving forward after all.
