As a seasoned gamer with decades of RPG adventures under my belt, I must admit, I was taken aback by the resounding success of Metaphor: ReFantazio. The creative minds behind Persona have always been a force to reckon with, but even I didn’t foresee such an unprecedented response from the gaming community.
The highly anticipated RPG from the masterminds behind Persona was bound to be successful, but surprisingly, ReFantazio has outperformed even Atlus and Sega’s expectations. Upon its launch a week ago, the fantasy RPG quickly attracted over 61,000 simultaneous players on Steam, and that number keeps climbing over the weekend.
According to SteamDB, on Sunday, the game “ReFantazio” reached a maximum of 85,961 players on Steam. The only other Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) with more simultaneous users on this platform is “Granblue Fantasy: Relink”, which was released earlier this year and peaked at almost 115,000 players. At the moment of writing, “ReFantazio” has over 50,000 concurrent players.
The recently debuted role-playing game in the fantasy genre has undoubtedly had a strong launch for Atlus. Not only is it one of the highest-rated games this year, but it also managed to sell more than a million copies within its first six hours, making it the quickest-selling game ever published by Atlus.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PC.
