As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “I found myself captivated by the series that introduces Jill Halfpenny’s character, Sian, an enigmatic boarder who moves into a household shared by a couple and their daughter. The intrigue deepens as Sian’s presence begins to unravel the bonds of this family, potentially shattering them apart.

The Cuckoo isn’t a retelling of real events, instead, it draws inspiration from classic thrillers that share the same theme and structure.
Regarding the latest show, Halfpenny shared her reasons for becoming part of the cast as Sian: “At first, the series was only a concept being tossed around. I had discussions about it with Mike Benson from Clapperboard, as well as the creator, Barunka O’Shaughnessy.
They mentioned their intention to create a work inspired by the ’90s films, such as “Single White Female,” an intriguing concept for me. We also came up with a narrative revolving around a woman who secretly joins a family, which I found interesting.
It turned out to be amusing as they initially assumed I’d portray the recipient of the drama, Jessica, in our early conversations. However, it was me who asked, ‘Would it be possible for me to play Sian instead? Can I be the one causing all this action, as that sounds more exciting!’
I found it intriguing to portray a character actively engaging in those actions, as opposed to simply being subjected to them.
Participating in discussions right from the start of the project was quite engaging. While others were doing the heavy lifting, exchanging thoughts and brainstorming about the direction of the narrative made for a stimulating experience.

1992 saw the release of a movie, which was adapted from John Lutz’s 1990 novel “SWF Seeks Same”. This film featured Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh in leading roles.
When discussing his inspirations, David Turpin (who penned episode 1 of The Cuckoo), mentioned: “I wanted to incorporate stronger, recognizable influences like ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ or ‘Single White Female’, but with a subtler, more European twist.

Similarly, ‘Fatal Attraction’ served as inspiration, highlighting how an obsession could escalate from seemingly harmless to extremely perilous.
Brian O’Malley, the director behind “Cuckoo”, admitted he found the show’s premise intriguing at first but had reservations about it. He explained: “Many dramas today are inspired by ’90s thrillers featuring villains akin to the infamous ‘bunny boiler’. However, I’ve often wrestled with this idea because it seems to portray these women as monstrous.
With “The Cuckoo,” I found the notion intriguing as it allowed for a deeper understanding of the female character, making her seem more human. This humanization evokes a sense of empathy, despite her role as the antagonist.
My primary intention for this production was to evoke genuine empathy towards the character Sian. Despite any other events, by the finale of this series, I wanted viewers to see beyond her actions and recognize her as a tormented individual. I didn’t want her portrayed as merely the ‘crazy woman,’ but rather as a complex human being. I believe we managed to accomplish that.
With each passing moment in the play, it becomes increasingly apparent that Sian’s entrance stirs up tensions and complications among this tight-knit family, all of whom are grappling with their own struggles beyond merely accommodating a new guest.
In “The Cuckoo,” Claire Goose plays the role of Jessica. When discussing the series’ vibe reminiscent of “Single White Female,” she expressed her liking for it, saying something like, “I found it intriguing.
When I initially conversed with our director, Brian O’Malley, he mentioned his intention to establish a sense of discomfort, an idea I found intriguing.
Absolutely, I was raised on movies similar to “Sleeping with the Enemy”, and revisiting them all has become a desire that I can’t ignore.
While I was filming in Ireland, I began watching shows such as Shattered. You may recall that these narratives were quite straightforward, yet they were skillfully woven together.
I strongly agree with that – at times, the complexity of certain dramas leaves both my spouse and me utterly puzzled!
