As a devoted follower of Autumnwatch and a nature enthusiast who finds solace in the tranquility of the woods, I couldn’t be more thrilled about its return this October. Having spent countless hours observing the intricate dance of life in various woodlands, I can attest to the profound beauty that unfolds during autumn. The vibrant hues, the rustling leaves, and the subtle signs of nature preparing for winter are truly a sight to behold.
Autumnwatch is coming back with three unique episodes airing on The One Show later this month, with Chris Packham leading the fall-themed spectacle.
On October 29th, 30th, and 31st, a naturalist is set to go live from Wytham Woods in Oxford. During this time, live thermal cameras will be set up to observe the local badger population as they exit their dens in search of food.
At this season, the diet of the forest-dwelling creatures adapts based on what’s easily accessible, a subject Packham plans to explore further in his show.
Additionally, he’ll discuss the advantages for mental well-being that arise from spending time in nature during the autumn season. Later on, he’ll invite entomologist Liam Crowley to elaborate on the ways in which various insect species adapt their camouflage strategies within their natural habitats.
In the third and final edition, it’s set on Halloween, which inspired Packham to delve into why some creatures gained a fearsome or eerie image – such as bats, owls, crows, and toads – by examining their origins in folklore.
Packham points out that autumn is a particularly enchanting period within our annual cycle. Contrary to how it might seem, this phase isn’t about winding down; rather, it represents nature’s process of recycling and readying itself for the upcoming seasons.
The vibrant fall hues indicate nature’s peak beauty, and I can hardly wait to share the tales of this season within one of my most cherished British woodlands.
For nearly twenty years, Autumnwatch thrived independently, but unfortunately, it was discontinued by the BBC in the previous year due to difficult financial circumstances and the desire to prioritize content with maximum impact.
The decision prompted outcry from fans and nature advocates, with co-presenter Michaela Strachan describing it as “disappointing” (via X).
Later on, during her interview with Loose Women, she clarified that they were faced with a decision: either cancel one of the annual documentaries (such as Springwatch and Winterwatch), or reduce financing for all of them.
She commented that it seemed like a good choice, as “Springwatch” is central to the series, which happens to be her favorite season since it provides a rich opportunity to delve into the tales of wildlife. (paraphrased from WalesOnline)
Autumnwatch returns on The One Show at 7pm on 29th-31st October 2024.
