Coronation Street airs cryptic flashbacks in Joel murder plot in early ITVX release

As a seasoned Corrie fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of many characters, I must admit that the latest twist in the Joel Deering murder case has left me utterly perplexed. From Ronnie to Ed, Mason, and even young Betsy, there seems to be an endless web of deceit and suspicion surrounding this tragic incident.

Heads up, fellow soap opera enthusiasts! Here’s a heads-up about last week’s Coronation Street episode (aired on 16th October 2024), now streaming on ITVX. Be prepared for potential spoilers if you haven’t caught up yet!

In the recent episode of Coronation Street, the events leading up to Joel Deering’s (Calum Lill) murder were revisited, yet despite questionable activities and numerous potential motives, the actual perpetrator remains a mystery.

Previously, characters Ronnie (Vinta Morgan) and Ed Bailey (Trevor Michael Georges) displayed suspicious behavior. As the ITV soap progressed, Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), found herself in a position where she needed to persuade Detective Constable Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) for information, as she had been removed from the case.

After shooing Ronnie away, Kit eventually disclosed to Lisa that Joel appeared to have been hit by a substantial object, possibly a crowbar.

In due course, Lisa’s concern for her daughter Betsy (Sydney Martin) prompted a conversation with Yasmeen Metcalfe (Shelley King) regarding Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan).

In simpler terms, when Yasmeen told everyone about the teen having a crowbar, she shared this information with Kit, and then advised Betsy to keep clear of Mason.

Betsy soon figured out that the police considered Mason a potential suspect, so she approached him to understand why they had their suspicions about him.

Later on, Kit found Mason secretly getting rid of a crowbar, leading to his arrest for questioning about Joel’s murder. During the interrogation in the interview room, Mason recounted that on the night Joel was slain, he had spent it all by himself at Speed Daal.

Speaking for myself, when queried about pursuing Joel in order to safeguard a frightened Betsy, I made it clear that Betsy herself had landed me in a tricky situation, so I wasn’t inclined to bend over backwards to assist her.

However, there was a brief scene shift where we saw Betsy walking into the shuttered eatery, finding Mason consoling a crying girl whom he vowed would not be harmed by Joel.

In a turn of events, Mason was freed without being charged because the crowbar carried only his genetic material, yet he cautioned Betsy to keep their distance from one another.

Simultaneously at the Rovers, Ronnie questioned his niece, Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown), after he caught wind of Lisa discussing a crowbar with her.

Later, another flashback scene depicted Ronnie retrieving the identical item once more. Was it Ronnie who murdered Joel, or could it be Mason who committed the crime instead?
