Serena Williams Details Getting Cyst Removed From Her Neck

As a fervent admirer of the indomitable Serena Williams, I find myself constantly in awe of her resilience and unwavering spirit. This latest chapter in her journey, her brave battle against a benign cyst, is yet another testament to her fortitude. Despite facing an obstacle as formidable as a grapefruit-sized lump on her neck, she remains undeterred, prioritizing her health and wellbeing above all else.

Serena Williams is recovering from a recent surgery.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner announced that she had a recent operation to take out a non-cancerous growth from her neck, which was a cyst.

43-years-old here, and let me share a health journey that’s been on my mind lately. In the heart of spring, I discovered an unusual lump appearing on my neck. Panicked yet determined, I rushed to the doctor for answers. An MRI confirmed it was a brachial cyst. Have you ever come across this term? My doctor assured me that removal wasn’t necessary if I preferred not to, but it persistently grew bigger. So, despite their advice, I chose not to have it removed.

Serena, mother of daughters Olympia, 7, and Adira, 13 months, along with her husband Alexis Ohanian, went on to say, “After undergoing three tests and a biopsy, everything remains negative. However, doctors strongly recommended immediate removal due to its size, which was similar to that of a small grapefruit. It could potentially become infected or even leak. So here I am having it removed. I feel incredibly grateful, fortunate, and above all, healthy. I managed to fulfill my promise of becoming an American doll with Olympia. And yes, everything is fine.

In the video, Serena provides narration detailing the events in the hospital room. The creator of Wyn Beauty momentarily displays an injury on her neck, and exhibits a tube emerging from her neck, which is used to collect fluids, as a nurse attends to her wound in the same area.

She commented, “Things turned out wonderfully,” and expressed great joy about collaborating with exceptional medical professionals.

The video concludes as Serena exits the physician’s office wearing a hood, concealing her post-surgery site, and continues to record herself in the car, apparently under the influence of medication.

Despite her procedure, Serena took Olympia for a day out.

She announced, “Here we are at American Girl,” as she gestured towards her daughter while aiming the camera. After briefly switching the focus back to herself, she revealed a bit of her post-surgery bandage and provided an update. “I’m feeling quite uncomfortable,” she admitted, “but I must press on.

Although she faithfully fulfilled her role as a mother, Serena acknowledged that she was also giving herself some leeway, realizing that this relaxation period was necessary for her recovery, which led to her absence from some significant events.

She expressed her regret for missing the Glamour Woman of the Year awards and Rafael Nadal’s retirement, posting this on X (previously known as Twitter) on a certain date. Although she’s still recuperating, she’s making progress. Above all, her health remains her top priority.

Serena openly discusses her previous health challenges, such as the near-fatal incident she experienced following Olympia’s birth in 2022, where she developed a lung blood clot that medical professionals nearly overlooked.

In 2022, the tennis player shared with Elle that they had a conversation with a nurse. They expressed their requirements, saying, “I require a CAT scan of both my lungs right away and then I must be on my heparin drip.” The nurse responded, “It seems like all this medication is making you act strangely.” To which the player replied, “No, I’m serious. What I need is for the scan to be done immediately, and it should be done with dye.
