As a dedicated follower of hockey, I can say that the tribute given by the Columbus Blue Jackets to Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew was a truly heartwarming display of respect and admiration for two individuals who left an indelible mark on the sport. The ceremony, which included a banner raising, a moving video tribute, and the players wearing jerseys bearing their names, was a poignant reminder of the impact that these brothers had not just on the game, but also on the lives of those who knew them.

The Columbus Blue Jackets team honored the memory of their former left winger, Johnny Gaudreau, along with his brother, Matthew Beaudreau, in a touching tribute.

Approximately two months following the unfortunate deaths of the siblings who were hit by a car while cycling in New Jersey, the hockey team paid tribute to the NHL star and minor league hockey player during a commemorative ceremony at their first game of the season against the Florida Panthers on October 15.

Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny’s expectant spouse, went to the event accompanied by their daughter Noa, 7-month-old son Johnny, and brother Eddie Morris. Also present was Sean Monahan, a forward for the Blue Jackets.

Apart from Johnny, his parents Guy and Jane Gaudreau, his sisters Kristen and Katie, and Matthew‘s wife Madeline (who’s pregnant with their first child, a boy named Tripp) also attended the event.

A sign displaying Johnny’s name and jersey number 13 was hoisted aloft, and his daughter could be spotted gazing upward at the ceiling of Columbus’ Nationwide Arena.

During the warm-up, players from both the Blue Jackets and Panthers donned jerseys with Gaudreau’s name and number 13. When the game started, Johnny’s team was missing a left winger, and they allowed 13 seconds to elapse on the clock. Later in the game, Sean scored a goal, and he gestured towards Gaudreau’s honorary banner as acknowledgment.

Onlookers too donned patches with No. 13, while the throng echoed the deceased athlete’s nickname, “Johnny Ice Hockey.

Additionally, a touching video memorializing the player’s life and professional journey was played. In response to the overwhelming affection displayed by the fans during this difficult time, his wife expressed her gratitude.

Meredith expressed in a pre-recorded message, later posted on our Instagram, that everyone should find inspiration from the life lived by John. This involves cherishing your family above all else, and when it comes to playing our sport, let’s share the same passion for the game that John had. Thank you, and here’s to the Jackets!
