Suzanne Collins’ New Hunger Games Book Cover Revealed: All the Details

As a lifelong fan of the Hunger Games franchise, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming movie that delves into Haymitch Abernathy’s triumphant battle in the 50th Games. Having followed his journey from mentor to victor, and then to a tormented soul, I can only imagine the depth and grit that Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie will bring to this tale. It’s like stepping into a time machine and reliving the glory days of Panem all over again.

Suzanne Collins is adding another piece into her games.

Four months after Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games, announced she was working on a new prequel titled The Sunrise on the Reaping, I am thrilled to share that we now have insights into its cover design and storyline. This eagerly anticipated book is set to delve into the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy, mentor to both Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, in the original Hunger Games franchise.

The latest book’s cover features a purple backdrop with a gold songbird and serpent facing each other in a curved horseshoe pattern. Golden spikes ascend behind the pair, giving an impression of a sunrise. In a conversation with Today, Scholastic vice president, publisher, and editorial director David Levithan commented on the new cover reveal, “The spiky sun heralds a symbol that will hold significant meaning for Haymitch Abernathy, as well as many readers.

The book, scheduled for release on March 18, 2025, has unveiled a quote from its protagonist, Haymitch Abernathy: “They won’t exploit my tears for their amusement.

Furthermore, the detailed account provided about the book on online sales platforms offers a clearer understanding of Haymitch’s odyssey.

In a simpler and more conversational way, the sentence “When you’ve been set up to lose everything you cherish, what else is there to strive for?” could be rephrased as: “In District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too much about his prospects. All he wants is to survive the day and be with the girl he adores.

In the 50th edition of the Quarter Quell, as revealed in Collins’ Hunger Games novels, it was foretold that Haymitch would emerge victorious. This event saw twice as many participants drafted into the arena compared to previous games. Instead of selecting one male and one female tribute from each district for the lethal competition, the Capitol chose two males and two females per district; in District 12, one of these pairs will include Haymitch.

In the book’s description, it is stated that when Haymitch’s name is called, he feels as if all his dreams shatter. This is because he is forcibly taken away from his family, the one he loves, and sent to the Capitol alongside three other District 12 tributes: a close friend who is like a sister to him, a person who is always making bets, and the most haughty girl in town.

In the novel “Sunrise on the Reaping“, no characters have been given names as of now, however in “Catching Fire“, Katniss discloses that one of her mother’s acquaintances, Maysilee Donner, was also selected for the reaping that year. At a certain point during the games, Haymitch and Maysilee will form an alliance, but their relationship before entering the arena remains undetermined.

As the Games commence, it becomes clear to Haymitch that he’s been intentionally positioned for defeat. Yet, deep within him, a stubborn will to battle persists, and he hopes this struggle might resonate powerfully beyond the lethal confines of the arena.

Following the unveiling of her new work, which continues the narrative started in the original Hunger Games trilogy and its prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (exploring President Coriolanus Snow’s backstory), Collins shared what sparked her creativity for this upcoming novel.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the author shared that as dawn broke over the harvest, they found themselves inspired by David Hume’s concept of tacit subordination and his quote, ‘the ease with which the multitude can be ruled by the few.’ The narrative further prompted them to delve into the manipulative nature of propaganda and the influence wielded by those who dictate the story. Each day, the question ‘Is it real or not?’ appears more pertinent to them.

Meanwhile, as “Sunrise on the Reaping” is still over five months distant, with its movie release scheduled for November 20, 2026, continue reading to discover more cherished novels that will soon be brought to life through film or television adaptations.
