R. Kelly’s daughter is sharing more details about her younger years.

Buku Abi (formerly Joann Kelly), daughter of R&B artist Andrea Kelly and R. Kelly, has accused her father of sexual abuse when she was around 8-9 years old. This harrowing incident, she claims, left lasting effects on her life.

Abi shared in the TVEI Network documentary R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, as reported by People, that she had been struggling mentally for a long time and this led to her being hospitalized in a psychiatric ward. She explained, “For a while, I was in a very dark place mentally, so severe that on multiple occasions, I considered suicide.

In a casual conversation, the young woman shared that her admission to the care center transpired following a difficult confession made to her mother: “I’m not alright” during their commute to school one morning.

On that particular day, Abi phoned the hospital, ultimately admitting me, and I didn’t depart until later. I stayed there for approximately two and a half weeks. During that time, I was under strict suicide monitoring. Following this prolonged stay, I attended outpatient care for about two to three months, meaning I had to visit there daily.

Apart from being a musician herself, Abi also disclosed a challenging discussion she asserted to have had with her mom, Andrea, during their trip to Target.

Abi shared that her mom noticed she had wounds on her wrists. She instantly set aside what she was doing and inquired, “What’s happening? Are you alright?” Her concern was palpable, and at that moment, Abi fell apart, confessing, “I don’t think I’m okay. I don’t believe I can keep going. I don’t think I’ll survive to live out the rest of my life.

More recent allegations have surfaced concerning the ’90s celebrity and his history of alleged abuse. In a chilling documentary series that premiered on October 11, Abi additionally disclosed her personal experience of being sexually assaulted by this individual.

In response to his daughter’s accusations, Jennifer Bonjean, his attorney, stated to People that R. Kelly firmly denies these charges. Previously, similar claims were made by his ex-wife, which were investigated by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and found to be unsubstantiated.

In the year 2021, Kelly was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking crimes and given a prison sentence of 30 years. The next year, he was convicted again, this time for child pornography and soliciting minors for sexual acts, which led to an extra 20-year term. Currently, the 57-year-old is serving both sentences simultaneously, with his release date set for 2045.
