As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has traversed through the celluloid jungle for decades, I must wholeheartedly endorse “The Franchise” to your watchlist. The allure of working with luminaries like Sam Mendes, Armando Iannucci, and Jon Brown was too enticing to resist, even if it meant recording some hilarious scenes in a Berlin coffee shop, where the locals might have mistaken me for a madman laughing hysterically.

How did you prepare for the part of troubled director Eric in The Franchise?
Upon learning about these directors – Sam Mendes, Armando Iannucci, and Jon Brown – my curiosity was piqued. Since Germans supposedly can’t be funny, I felt compelled to film some scenes they shared with me. I did this in a Berlin coffee shop with friends, but the situation became awkward because I laughed so much that I had to leave. It’s particularly humiliating for an actor who might be recognized in Berlin to laugh out loud.
Was being in Captain America: Civil War good training?
On the initial filming day of Captain America in Atlanta, temperatures soared above 40°C, yet the scene was set in subzero Siberia. In a Canada Goose jacket, I was perspiring as I portrayed a character attempting suicide, delivering an emotional soliloquy against a green backdrop. Chadwick Boseman, an exceptional actor, joined me, both of us before the same green screen. It all seemed unnaturally cold. During one rehearsal, I couldn’t help but laugh, but when I saw everyone’s serious demeanor, I composed myself. There were instances where I questioned my actions, wondering why I was speaking this way, pretending to be in Siberia while sweating profusely like a pig. However, upon viewing the final scene, it turned out that it came together quite effectively.
Have you had any disasters on film yourself?
Reading over my selections, there are a few real duds on the list. One movie in particular was such a struggle for me. Every morning I’d stand under the shower contemplating tears, as I thought, “This is an awful production and I have to argue its merits on camera every day, reciting the most nonsensical dialogue.” That’s what I could relate to about Eric – he’s striving to add some respectability to this project, while enduring humiliation and abject terror.
So would you be keen to do another superhero project?
For the past couple of years, I’ve turned down several large projects and declined some financial opportunities because they didn’t seem engaging or appealing enough for me. It can be a bit disheartening to hang up the phone after such decisions, but money shouldn’t drive my choices, as I am aware of the potential struggles that come with them. I wouldn’t want to find myself in a hotel room, regretting my decision by opening the minibar and thinking, “What was I thinking when I said yes?” I don’t want to end up like Eric.
What would a German superhero be like?
Very calculated, sombre and serious. And with the narrowest mind — that’s the superpower!
