All Creatures Great and Small’s Carmody announces departure as he makes decision

As a film critic who once spent my formative years hopscotching between boarding schools and far-flung locales with my parents, I can’t help but empathize with Richard Carmody’s reluctance to leave his Skeldale House family. The warmth and camaraderie portrayed in All Creatures Great and Small echoes the sense of belonging I often craved as a child.

And so it seems Richard Carmody has left All Creatures Great and Small.

Not only did the veterinarian ace all his tests impressively, but he also earned the highest honors in his class that year. As a result, he was given an opportunity to join a research program at Imperial College London as a special recognition.

But at first, he was reluctant to accept the offer.

Initially, I found myself wrestling with feelings of guilt, working diligently in my laboratory while others valiantly fought on the battlefront. Yet, instead of joining the throng in the capital, I believed that my unique skills were most needed right here in Darrowby, where I could contribute effectively by tending to the local veterinary needs.

However, what truly mattered to him, as Mrs. Hall swiftly noticed, was his strong attachment to the Skeldale House family, with whom he had formed a deep bond over time.

As a child, Carmody often found himself away from home as his parents were frequently abroad, thus leading to him being raised in a boarding school. However, upon arriving at Darrowby during his placement, he discovered the family he had been missing all along.

He told Tristan, as they were both stuck in Mrs. Pumphrey’s house last week, “It feels refreshing to establish a sense of belonging somewhere.

Tristan will sleep in his own bed again shortly, as Carmody is leaving to join a renowned research program, thus freeing up that bed for him.

“I wish I could take you all with me,” he said after delivering the bittersweet news.

However, since his makeshift family emphasized, there is “a spot reserved” for him at Skeldale, it’s yet uncertain whether he will reappear, possibly during a holiday special or as a recurring character in a future season.

In the fourth season, which began in October of the previous year, Carmody joined the team as a reinforcement for Siegfried and James due to Tristan’s departure. However, his adaptation to life in the Yorkshire Dales was anything but effortless.

Actor James Anthony-Rose remarked, “He seems out of place, like a fish out of water.” He gives off an impression that there’s little left for him to learn. However, this situation is a learning curve for him… It’s about experiencing humility, facing challenges, and eventually admitting that he might not know everything, and that some answers can’t be found in books alone.

At first, he begins to understand the need to improve his interpersonal skills, an area where James, Mrs. Hall, Helen, and even unexpectedly, Siegfried, offer assistance.

And that they certainly did.

Godspeed, Richard Carmody. You will be missed.
