As a seasoned observer of the entertainment world, I must say, Liam Payne’s evolution over the years is nothing short of captivating. From his humble beginnings on “The X Factor” to becoming a global superstar as one-fifth of One Direction, Liam has certainly come a long way.
Louis Tomlinson is grieving the loss of his friend Liam Payne.
After Payne passed away on October 16 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Tomlinson – who used to be a bandmate with him in One Direction, along with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan – finally spoke up, admitting that he was finding it hard to come to terms with saying goodbye.
Tomlinson expressed deep sorrow on Instagram October 17th, stating that he lost his brother Liam. “Liam was someone I admired every day, possessing a warm, humorous, and compassionate spirit,” he wrote. “I first encountered Liam when he was sixteen and I was eighteen. I was immediately captivated by his voice, but as time passed, I had the privilege of witnessing the loving brother I had longed for all my life.
The “Just Hold On” singer went on to praise Payne’s talent and importance to their group’s success.
Tomlinson went on to say, “Liam was an exceptional melodist, no doubt about it. To set the record straight, I believe Liam was the heart and soul of One Direction. His early life experiences, his uncanny ability to hit the right notes, his commanding stage presence, his knack for songwriting – these qualities and more are what made him so valuable. Thank you for influencing us in such a profound way, Liam.
He also shared a heartfelt message directly to Payne.
Tomlinson expressed, “If you’re hearing this, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have known you. I am deeply grateful that our bond has grown stronger since the band days. Talking for hours on the phone, reliving countless wonderful memories we shared, was something I thought would be a lifelong privilege for me.
Apart from informing his old bandmate, Tomlinson assured him that he would stand by his son, Bear, whom Payne had with ex-partner Cheryl Cole, prior to their farewell.
He expressed that if Bear requires him, he will serve as the supportive uncle in his life, sharing tales about what a fantastic father he was. He also shared that he regrets not having the opportunity to bid farewell and express one last time how much he cherished him. To Payno, his dear friend, brother, he conveyed his deep affection, wishing for him to rest peacefully. X represents a warm farewell.
Shortly after the news broke, the band issued a collective statement expressing deep sorrow over Liam’s death, mentioning that they would each share their thoughts at a later time.
Payne and Tomlinson’s friendship originated in 2010 when they were placed as a band during season seven of The X Factor. Even though they achieved success from the show and the fame that ensued, their relationship didn’t get off to a smooth start initially.
In a 2019 interview with Hits Radio (as reported by Hello! Magazine), Payne explained that during our time in the band, there was an unusual dynamic due to him being the oldest and my previous singing experience. He aspired to be the leader while I also wanted that role. Consequently, we initially didn’t get along at all – we genuinely disliked each other. Despite this, we managed to keep it hidden well.
In spite of their rough start and One Direction’s temporary breakup in early 2016, Payne and Tomlinson eventually forged a robust bond marked by continuous mutual encouragement. This support was particularly evident when Tomlinson’s mother, Johannah Deakin, passed away from leukemia in December 2016.
Payne expressed deep sympathy towards X (formerly Twitter) in a statement, saying, ‘I’m deeply saddened for you.’ He continued, ‘From afar or close by, my love for you remains unchanged. You can always count on me to be there for you, as you have been for me.’

This film beautifully narrated his transformative journey from being a member of One Direction to establishing himself as a successful solo music artist.
I’m currently feeling a pain in my neck due to the amount of time I’ve been gazing up at you,” Payne expressed on his now-deleted Instagram post from March 2023, as reported by Billboard. “You were already someone I considered a friend and brother, but getting a glimpse into your life and thoughts has only deepened my admiration for you. The challenges you’ve faced and your ability to keep it all hidden are truly remarkable.
I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior and not living up to your expectations, Payne said. I feel embarrassed in those instances for not being the friend to you that you’ve been to me. Now that I’m back to normal, I want to rectify things and make it right.
In 2023, the artist known for “Strip That Down” spent 100 days in rehab and acknowledged that his bandmate contributed significantly to helping him emerge from a challenging period in his life, which he described as a difficult time.
In his own words, Payne expressed how incredibly fortunate he feels, a sentiment you’re well aware of. You were amongst a select few who literally rescued him from a dire situation that he’s never revealed before. What impresses him most is your methodology, something he aspires to emulate in the hope that one day he too can help others as you have helped him.
