As a lifelong fan of film and special effects, I can confidently say that Howard Berger is nothing short of a legend in our industry. His work on some of the most iconic films of recent times, from Alita to Kill Bill, has left an indelible mark on cinema history.
A significant number of impressive makeup effects from recent years have been supplied by KNB FX, a highly skilled special effects studio. One of its key figures, Howard Berger (the B in KNB), has contributed to a vast array of films including Alita, Transformers, Annabelle, Hitchcock, Predators, Hostel, Sin City, Austin Powers 3, Mulholland Drive, The Green Mile, From Dusk til Dawn. The list goes on and he deservedly won an Oscar for his work on ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’. He is deeply passionate about his craft and particularly cherishes working on Quentin Tarantino’s films, having provided effects for all nine of his movies to date. A friendly and incredibly knowledgeable individual, we had a conversation with Howard about his involvement in Tarantino’s films and he shared insights into the creation of that breathtaking Kill Bill fight scene in the House of Blue Leaves where Uma Thurman took on the entire Crazy 88’s gang, dispatching them in a gruesome yet spectacular fashion. All made possible by Howard and his team.
For those who cherish their monster collection, I highly recommend delving into the book, ‘Masters of Make Up Effects,’ jointly authored by Marshall Julius. This captivating read offers a rich tapestry of stunning images, meticulously arranged, and reveals the tale behind each makeup artistry masterpiece created by the artists themselves. You’ll find an abundance of fascinating stories within, from Hellboy and An American Werewolf in London to The Elephant Man, Alien, Planet of the Apes, From Dusk til Dawn, and many more. There isn’t much left unexplored in this comprehensive guide.
