Ariana Grande Weighs in on Cynthia Erivo’s Wicked Poster Criticism

As a die-hard fan of Ariana Grande and everything she does, I can’t help but be captivated by her latest insights into the evolving world of art and AI. The way she navigates this complex issue with grace and understanding is truly inspiring.

Ariana Grande knows something has changed within the creative world.

In a recent comment, the star of “Wicked” expressed thoughts about how artificial intelligence has broadened the creative possibilities within fan-made artworks. This was evidently showcased in a modified movie poster that Ariana’s co-star, Cynthia Erivo, faced criticism for because it resembled the original musical poster, where Elphaba’s face is concealed in shadow.

The additional AI-made movie poster depicting a fight between Ariana and Cynthia, along with the perceived slight, sparked reflections from the “7 Rings” artist about AI entering the realm of fan art creation.

She shared with Variety at the Academy Museum Gala on October 19th that she finds AI both perplexing and challenging at times, but she believes it’s a significant period of adaptation. She added that this is something so immense that it surpasses us, and fans will have a great time experimenting and making their own edits.

However, acknowledging that there are limits to what art should depict, Ariana remarked, “Yes, I agree. My sister, Cynthia, holds immense respect in my eyes, and I adore her immensely. It’s all about finding the right balance during this transition phase.

As she put it, “It’s so much stimulation about something that’s so much bigger than us.”

Certainly, there’s a lot of excitement building among fans about the upcoming movie musical. Fans of “Wicked” are particularly eager for the debut of part one, which boasts an impressive cast that includes Ariana and Cynthia, alongside Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh.

However, as the enthusiasm grew into changing the movie’s poster to resemble the musical’s classic imagery, Cynthia voiced her disapproval on social media, criticizing the alteration which obscured the upper part of her face.

On her Instagram Story dated October 16th, the Tony Award recipient expressed that what she saw was incredibly disrespectful and offensive. She drew a parallel between this manipulated poster and inappropriate queries about her green skin from fans during the film, stating that it’s neither amusing nor adorable. Instead, it diminishes me, it diminishes us.

She went on to say, “The initial post is an ILLUSTRATION. In contrast, I am a living, breathing individual. I decided to face the camera directly, looking straight at the viewer… because, without uttering a word, we often convey emotions and messages through our eyes.

Because, as she noted, the upcoming movie nor its poster is meant to be a copy of the original.

She clarified, “Our poster pays tribute, not copies, another’s work.” She went on to say, “Altering my image by changing my features or concealing my eyes feels like obliterating my identity. That’s incredibly painful for me.
