John Stapleton, GMB presenter and broadcaster, shares Parkinson’s diagnosis

As a fellow media veteran who has spent countless mornings glued to the screen, listening to the soothing tones of John Stapleton and his esteemed colleagues, I must say I was deeply saddened to learn about his recent diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease.

Broadcaster John Stapleton has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Today on BBC Morning Live (October 21st), John was joined by his co-host son Nick, who shared: “Over the past year, I’ve observed that dad has appeared more anxious, walked less assuredly, and exhibited a tremor in his hand.

Approximately two months ago, he underwent some medical examinations, and regrettably, a couple of days later, he received the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. This news was incredibly distressing.

John has gained recognition for hosting and reporting on various morning TV shows such as Good Morning Britain, GMTV, Daybreak, along with Watchdog, where he co-hosted alongside his late partner Lynn Faulds Wood.

In simpler terms, John expressed that he has spent nearly half a century earning his living through speaking, and at times, it can be quite aggravating, especially when people frequently ask him to repeat himself due to not understanding what he said the first time.

I tend to approach the possibility of things worsening with a good dose of practicality. I make an effort to stay optimistic, as it seems futile not to.

In the movie, it’s shown that Nick’s father was diagnosed with the same disease as his mom, Lynn, who had passed away earlier, having been diagnosed with it several years prior.

John mused about his wife’s passing, stating: ‘Ultimately, she found herself confined within our home. Her routine underwent a significant transformation, and I anticipate that mine will follow suit.’

From 1985 to 1993, John and his spouse hosted Watchdog, taking charge of the program. Unfortunately, John passed away following a stroke in 2020 at the age of 72.

Regarding our future plans, John shared with his son: “I’m quite hesitant to step out of our home, and I might need your assistance in making a decision… But I prefer staying right here.

Certain everyday tasks might prove challenging, such as navigating the stairs. Currently, this is an issue for me. If possible, I’d prefer to install a stairlift rather than relocating from my home.

Speaking as a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “While I’d prefer to delay the inevitable, I understand the necessity of seeking care when needed. I’ll hold on tight, fighting the clock, but I’m also pragmatic enough to accept the reality.
