Surfer Giulia Manfrini Dead at 36 After Being Speared by Swordfish

As a fellow enthusiast of adventure sports, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of sorrow upon hearing about the untimely demise of Giulia Manfrini. Her life was a testament to the spirit of exploration and love for nature that binds us all. From her days as a snowboard instructor in Italy to her global journeys chasing waves, Giulia embodied the free-spirited, adventurous soul that we all aspire to be.

Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini has died after a fatal run-in with a swordfish.

36-year-old woman was surfing off the coast of Mentawai Islands Regency in Indonesia on October 18th when a swordfish leapt unexpectedly and impaled her chest, as reported by Lahmudin Siregar, acting head of the Mentawai Islands’ Disaster Management Agency, to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

I was frantically taken to the Pei Pei Pasakiat Taileleu Health Center, but tragically, my heart shattered as I couldn’t overcome my injuries, according to the report.

According to medical records acquired by the news organization, Manfrini sustained a significant wound about two inches in depth and exhibited symptoms consistent with drowning.

As a fellow travel enthusiast and co-founder of AWAVE Travel alongside James Colston, I can tell you that he described the recent event as an unforeseen, unexpected mishap – a “freak accident,” to put it simply.

Despite the valiant attempts by her companion, resort personnel, and medical professionals, it proved impossible to save Giulia, as stated in his October 18th Instagram post. We hold the belief that she passed away while engaged in an activity she cherished, in a location that held great significance for her.

Speaking about Manfrini, Colston said, “Manfrini is like the vital essence of our company. Her infectious smile, hearty laughter, and boundless enthusiasm for life make everyone fall in love with her when she travels. It’s fortunate to have her along on any charter or surf trip.

He added, “We love you Giulia. I am so sorry to say goodbye.”

Before earning my teaching certification through the International Surfing Association, I was a snowboard instructor affiliated with the Associazione Maestri Sci Italiani – commonly known as the Italian Ski Instructors Association, as stated on my LinkedIn profile.

As per Manfrini’s biography on the AWAVE Travel site, she used to be a professional snowboarder. Her passion for surfing took her across the globe in pursuit of waves.

When she’s not planning trips, her profile indicates that she spends her time surfing waves, searching for snow (powder), composing songs, dancing, and playing beach volleyball!

Years prior to her passing, Manfrini had journeyed to the Mentawai Islands. In a 2022 Instagram post tagged at the surfing destination, she shared her experience of witnessing an exceptional and extremely rare sight: a complete circular rainbow, often referred to as ‘GLORY,’ in the sky.

She added at the time, “Grateful for this life and nature!”
