What you need to know

  • Undead Labs and Wushu Studios have officially released Update 38, the final update for State of Decay 2.
  • Now, the development teams are fully focused on State of Decay 3, which still doesn’t have a release window.
  • State of Decay 2’s final update includes a ton of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, but that’s not all.
  • The update also unlocks all in-game content for all players, including previously time-limited and exclusive event content.

As a tech enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the post-apocalyptic world of State of Decay 2 since its launch, I can confidently say that Update 38: Legacy Awaits is a fitting farewell to an amazing game. This final update serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of Undead Labs and Wushu Studios, who have consistently delivered updates and improvements over the past six years.

Today brings a mix of joy and sadness for all State of Decay enthusiasts, including myself. For more than six years, we’ve enjoyed post-launch updates that introduced new gameplay elements, in-game content, and enhancements… Now, the journey comes to a close with State of Decay 2’s final update.

Update 38: Legacy Awaits, developed by Undead Labs and collaborators Wushu Studios (following the release of “Curveball”), has been made available on Xbox consoles and Windows PC. This update is filled with numerous bug fixes and enhancements for the enduring co-op zombie-survival game, but more importantly, it offers a final opportunity to keep playing State of Decay 2 for those still unwilling to part ways.

Beyond the team, it’s all hands on deck for creating State of Decay 3 from here on out, for everyone other than those not involved.

The perfect final send-off for an amazing game

From the very start when it was released, State of Decay 2 has captivated me, despite its initial quirks and glitches that came with a new game.

After that point, the game has made remarkable progress, with 38 distinct content updates coming from both Undead Labs and later Wushu Studios. These updates introduced new features, special in-game events, significant improvements to existing mechanics, as well as numerous bug fixes and enhancements to overall game quality. However, this had to come to an end eventually, as most of the team at Undead Labs has been dedicated to developing the next installment in the State of Decay series for quite some time now.

On October 22, 2024, State of Decay 2’s adventure concludes as Undead Labs shifts their focus entirely to the development of State of Decay 3 with Update 38: Legacy Awaits. Although we won’t see State of Decay 3 until later, this final update ensures that State of Decay 2 remains playable for a long time. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect from this update:

  • Brand-new outfits. Players will be able to find a wide assortment of new outfits and other cosmetic items hidden throughout the world for their community survivors.
  • Unlocking the vault. State of Decay 2 has enjoyed a number of exclusive and limited-time seasonal events during its life, and Undead Labs is officially unsealing the vault and releasing all of that content into the wild. Now, players will be able to collect all the outfits, weapons, and even unique vehicles from those past events.
  • Some interesting changes. With Legacy Awaits, water now affects the momentum of vehicles. Yes, six years later, and we now have water drag! On top of that, you can finally access survivor inventories directly from the community tab. Random zombie spawning has also been reduced for certain noisy activities.
  • Other bug fixes and improvements. There’s actually quite the impressive list of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements in this final release, with Undead Labs and Wushu Studios targeting gameplay, zombies and combat, in-game events, community features, missions, the user interface, and the Curveball game mechanic for a myriad of refinements and changes.

Initially, Undead Labs announced the conclusion of State of Decay 2’s development in September, and now that moment has arrived. I must admit, I’m thrilled about State of Decay 3, and I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised by the amount of post-release support State of Decay 2 received.
