Guerrilla Created Horizon Because it Was “Done” with Killzone

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen the ebb and flow of many beloved franchises. The news about Guerrilla Games moving away from the Killzone series has left me feeling a tad melancholic, much like an old-timer reminiscing about his glory days.

Despite achieving remarkable success with the Horizon series, there remains a significant group of Killzone fans yearning for Guerrilla to revisit the sci-fi first-person shooter franchise. However, based on recent comments from art director Roy Postma (who’s been with Guerrilla since 2000), it seems unlikely that the studio plans to revisit the Killzone universe.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Postma discussed Killzone, mentioning that Guerrilla had moved away from the franchise when they began creating Horizon Zero Dawn. He explained that the new game was intentionally designed to offer a more vibrant and colorful experience compared to the grim and somber atmosphere of the Killzone universe.

Postma stated that as a team, we had concluded our work on it. To revitalize our creative approach, we opted to take a new direction, one that contrasted with Killzone. I believe the themes depicted in this narrative – such as forming a ‘found family’ and discovering your role in the world – resonate universally across various age groups and individuals.

As a dedicated fan of Killzone, it’s been over a decade since we last heard anything new from the series, and seeing how well Horizon has been doing, I’ve had my doubts about a potential comeback for Killzone. However, recent comments by Postma have only added to those concerns, making it seem like the odds of a revival are becoming increasingly slim. This news isn’t exactly music to our ears as fans who’ve waited so long for more Killzone action.

As a fellow Horizon enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you! We Horizon fans have plenty to anticipate in the coming months. Firstly, the highly-awaited remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn, titled “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered,” is set to release on October 31. Secondly, the much-desired LEGO Horizon Adventures is scheduled to launch on November 14, not long after the remastered edition!
