As a long-time Whovian with a soft spot for the Eighth Doctor and his enigmatic companions, I must say that the announcement of “Deadly Strangers” has me positively giddy! The return of the Mara, a villain steeped in mystery and intrigue, promises to deliver a thrilling tale that will keep us on the edge of our seats.

Recently, Big Finish shared an exclusive backstage photo featuring Paul McGann, India Fisher, and Jaye Griffiths in preparation for their upcoming Doctor Who audio drama titled “Deadly Strangers.” Additionally, they unveiled the artwork and plot synopsis for the forthcoming box set.

In December 2024, we’re expecting to unveil a three-piece collection, which brings back an iconic villain from the past – the Mara, who made its debut in the 1982 Doctor Who TV story “Kinda” and resurfaced the next year in “Snakedance”.

In simpler terms, the Mara is a powerful being that often appears as a snake, gaining control over its victims through their dreams. For quite some time now, producer David Richardson has been eager to bring this malevolent force back into the storyline.

He shared, “I found it intriguing to consider how they might perform within a new TARDIS crew.

Previously, stories for television and audio have primarily centered around the remarkable crew of the Fifth Doctor. However, it’s refreshing to introduce a change, and in this case, we follow the Eighth Doctor and his companions as they confront a malevolent force.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that the Eighth Doctor, played by McGann, along with his companions Charley (Fisher) and Audacity (Griffiths), are back for an incredible three-episode adventure! In these new stories, they’ll have a close encounter with the Mara at a luxurious sleep clinic. Additionally, they’ll cross paths with the legendary composer Puccini and lend aid to a troubled child during a women’s strike in 1970s Iceland. The anticipation is building!

The upcoming stories are named “Puccini and the Doctor,” “Day Off,” and “The Gloaming.” These captivating tales have been penned by authors Matthew Jacobs, Lisa McMullin, and a team consisting of Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle.

Regarding the revisitation of the Mara, Pringle expressed: “It’s been such a thrill to delve once more into Kinda and Snakedance, two captivating tales, as well as the universe and mythology that Christopher Bailey crafted for the Mara. This is an incredibly rich and highly intellectual setting, steeped in modernist poetry, with TS Eliot’s work having a significant impact.

We aimed to explore more about it, and the concept of the Mara being a manifestation that arises when an empire falls.
