Venom: The Last Dance ending explained – is Venom dead? Full spoilers

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Venom: The Last Dance left me feeling a bit like a symbiote myself – torn between my love for the character and my disappointment with the film’s execution.

(**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance**)

The third movie from the Venom series, believed to be the finale for Tom Hardy’s portrayal of both the character Eddie Brock (a former journalist) and the main character Venom (the symbiote he hosts), is now playing in theaters.

In terms of its critical response, Venom: The Last Dance has generally echoed the unfavorable opinions of its predecessors, mainly receiving poor or negative reviews.

Now, we’re optimistic that it might achieve similar success at the box office as the original film and become a favorite among moviegoers.

The movie follows Eddie and Venom as they evade both the authorities, led by a mysterious soldier named Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and a monstrous being called the Xenophage. The Xenophage was dispatched by symbiote overlord Knull in search of a Codex that resides within Eddie and Venom, bound together for complex reasons.

As they travel toward their ultimate destination, New York City, the duo experiences quite an adventure, managing to enjoy themselves along the way. They encounter various interesting characters such as a group of UFO enthusiasts, headed by Martin, who has a hippie vibe (played by Rhys Ifans), and their old acquaintance, Mrs. Chen (Peggy Lu).

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder about the climax – is it truly the final waltz? Join me as we delve into the conclusion of ‘Venom: The Last Dance’.

Venom: The Last Dance ending explained – Is Venom dead?

Considering how persistently they were being followed and the fact that they stood out quite noticeably during their journey, it was generally hard to imagine that Eddie and Venom wouldn’t encounter any trouble on their way to New York.

In Las Vegas, they unexpectedly bump into Mrs. Chen, at which point Venom transforms back to his complete form for a dance with her – an imprudent move, as it exposed the Codex to the approaching Xenophage. Unsurprisingly, this action triggered an attack, and during the ensuing chaos, Venom was captured by Strickland’s group, leaving Eddie in their custody as well.

They’re both transported to Area 51, where Eddie is questioned. However, instead of giving up, Venom manages to break free and reconnect with Eddie, triggering a massive conflict with the Xenophage. This confrontation also results in several other symbiotes being released from a nearby lab, who bond with new hosts and join the fight. It all gets quite chaotic.

The fight intensifies when Knull dispatches additional Xenophages to bolster his agenda, yet amidst the chaos, Eddie valiantly rescues Martin and his kin who had penetrated Area 51 in pursuit of extraterrestrials by enticing them away. Regrettably, at this juncture, Venom discerns that there’s merely one action capable of thwarting Knull’s ambitions – Eddie and the symbiote must part ways, resulting in the destruction of the Codex.

After that, he takes leave of his gracious host, joining the chasing Xenophages and guiding them towards a nearby acid fountain where they all appear to disintegrate. Seeing Strickland critically injured, he urges him to activate it, which seems to be a decisive end for our character.

As Eddie regains his strength and receives forgiveness for his past transgressions due to his heroics in the battle, I find myself embarking on a journey to the bustling city of New York. Here, I’m treated to a heartwarming montage of some of my dearest moments with Venom, my complex ally and companion. Even a visit to the iconic Statue of Liberty was included, a poignant nod to our unfulfilled promise made to each other, serving as a touching tribute to our shared history.

The demise of Venom aligns perfectly with Hardey’s statements that this signifies the conclusion of his association with this character and series. Nonetheless, a small flicker of uncertainty lingers – thus, there remains a minimal possibility he might reappear in the future.

Interestingly, Venom’s final words as he melted away were: “Bye for now.”

If even a tiny bit of Venom had survived, as suggested by the movie’s earlier revelations about its shedding process, there might still be a chance for him to return. Perhaps that roach we see moving toward the acid shower in the closing credits could become his new host instead.

What does the Venom: The Last Dance mid-credits scene mean for the future?

Despite questions surrounding Venom’s own future, it seems clear that Sony’s wider Spider-Man universe is thriving.

In the climactic fight, a number of symbiotes made their appearance, most notably Agony, who combined with Juno Temple’s character Dr. Teddy Payne. It appears that the storyline will progress for the franchise as it moves away from focusing on Venom and towards exploring other members of his kind.

However, a clear hint that there’s more to come is subtly indicated during the mid-credit scene, where the main antagonist, Knull, proclaims his intention of returning, implying that the universe will no longer be secure from his malevolent actions.

It’s puzzling why this situation unfolded as such – considering the main point of the movie seemed to be watching Eddie and Venom destroying the Codex, which was their pathway out of prison – nonetheless, Sony’s Spider-Verse isn’t renowned for its logical storytelling.

In essence, Kelly Marcel, the director of the film, almost assured us that Knull will reappear following her interview with Games Radar. She stated that given his immense size, he’s not suitable for a one-time appearance. Instead, The Last Dance serves as an initial introduction to him, offering a glimpse into potential future storylines for Knull in his own movies, much like how Thanos was carefully introduced throughout the Marvel films.

Here it is: The scene is now ready for Knull’s comeback, and it seems he’ll face off against Agony and possibly other unseen symbiotes in the upcoming movie. It’s clear that the Sony Spider-Man universe still has more stories to tell.

Venom: The Last Dance is in UK cinemas from Friday 25th October 2024.
