Halsey Details Near-Death Experience on Great Impersonator Album

As a dedicated follower of Halsey’s music and public journey, I find their latest album, “The Great Impersonator,” to be a poignant and powerful testament to the human spirit. The raw emotion and vulnerability that Ashley Frangipane pours into her art is truly inspiring.

Months following their proclamation of feeling grateful for life after being diagnosed with lupus and a bone marrow disorder, the “Without Me” singer, whose birth name is Ashley Frangipane, seems to have explored their emotional health voyage throughout their fifth studio album titled “The Great Impersonator,” which dropped on Oct. 25.

In “Panic Attack,” the pop artist, who’s currently betrothed to actor Avan Jogia, expresses lyrics suggesting that a romantic interest influences their body’s health condition.

The lyrics express a sense of being deeply discouraged and weary, as well as a longing to feel affection but being held back by past experiences: “My hope is dwindling, my heart feels shattered… And I yearn to embrace you wholeheartedly, but my history keeps tallying the score.

However, the lyrics for this album were quite concrete in other parts. A set of three tracks called “Letter to God” repeated a similar chorus but subtly altered the words, exploring the struggle of battling an illness on each occasion.

On ‘Letter to God (1983)’, Halsey sings, ‘Oh please, God, I don’t want to be unwell,’ and ‘I don’t wish to feel pain, so end it swiftly.’

One notable track among many, “Life of the Spider,” appears to have originated from a deeply affecting recollection stemming from Halsey’s personal health struggle.

The song begins at four in the morning, as I rest with my head on the toilet seat. For several days, I’ve been living here, too exhausted to sleep, too ill to eat. I feel monstrous, and it doesn’t make things better when you treat me that way. It seems as if I have poison in my teeth.

Meanwhile, on the ballad “Darwinism,” the 30-year-old reckoned with the concept of death itself.

They mused about the possibility, ‘Am I merely stardust? Encase me in a corroding metal container and propel me into the cosmos to explode, or bring me back to disintegrate within the Earth’s core.’

Halsey, who has a 3-year-old son named Ender with her ex, Alev Aydin, revealed their health issues back in June, just after she had released the song titled “The End.

In 2022, Halsey revealed on Instagram that she was initially diagnosed with Lupus SLE and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. Currently, these conditions are being controlled or are in remission. Unfortunately, it appears that she will have to deal with them for the rest of her life.

From my perspective as a dedicated follower, Lupus SLE, as recognized by the National Institutes of Health, is a long-term autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells within the body. On another note, T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder, as per their description, is associated with the production of bone marrow cells and is relatively uncommon, but it typically affects those with compromised immune systems.

Thankfully, Halsey pointed out that they’ve been successfully dealing with their health issues. They went on to say, “Following a difficult beginning, things gradually fell into place with the assistance of exceptional medical professionals. After two years, I’m feeling much improved and more grateful than ever for music as a source of solace.

Initially, the Grammy-nominated artist mentioned on X that “I had initially believed it could be my final opportunity to create an album, as I was composing it.
