The lead singer of the band The 1975, who had a brief relationship with Taylor Swift in early 2023, recently discussed what currently motivates his music following his rise to greater prominence as a public figure for multiple reasons. His intriguing remarks have left fans speculating if he was subtly criticizing Taylor’s songwriting abilities.
On the October 22nd episode of the Doomscroll podcast, Matty stated that he wouldn’t truthfully create a record about the numerous rumors and speculations regarding his personal life, including his casual relationships, simply because he gained fame. In simpler terms, he expressed that it would not be accurate for him to make such a record due to the attention and gossip surrounding his personal matters as a result of his celebrity status.
Following what appeared to be a mention of his relationship with Taylor, who has been linked to Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce since summer 2023, Matty seemed to delve into the topic of her musical style. Notably, Taylor’s album “Tortured Poets Department” features songs like “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “Fortnight,” which are said to be inspired by Matty’s personal experiences.
He went on to say, “Many artists often find themselves intrigued by their history or events connected to them that are well-known, and they wish to express these aspects as well. It’s understandable.
However, the 35-year-old, who became engaged to Gabbriette Bechtel in June, clarified that drawing from real-life experiences doesn’t even figure in his most imaginative aspirations.
Matty expressed his opinion that it’s clear to draw such a conclusion,” he said. “However, he has no interest in it. The notion of creating a record based on personal experiences that would be over two years old by the time it’s released seems unappealing to him. He’s observed others doing this, and finds it lacking in appeal.
Originally, the “About You” artist confessed that he previously composed songs focusing on relationships more frequently, drawing inspiration from his personal journal entries and fragments of heartache. Nowadays, however, he chooses to create music intended to initiate discussions.
He stated, “My work is art pop, which I sincerely hope, sheds light on academic topics I find fascinating and could potentially make them more accessible to a wider audience.
