Wolverine’s Movie Costumes, Ranked (Including the Incredibly Expensive One)

As a lifelong comic book fan who’s been following Wolverine since his debut, I must say that the recent portrayals of our favorite mutant have truly been a sight for sore eyes! The list you’ve presented takes me down memory lane, reminding me of the countless hours I spent poring over comics, dreaming about seeing these iconic looks brought to life on the big screen.

As Deadpool and Wolverine become available on home video and approach their streaming release date, there’s been an increasing flow of information about the production process of this highly anticipated film. One intriguing detail that has surfaced is how a single, tiny (but awesome) cameo costume ended up costing approximately $100,000. This was just one of several memorable appearances by Hugh Jackman in the movie, and given this recent development, it seems fitting to compare the new costumes for these characters with their previous ones on screen.

Before we begin, a few points to keep in mind: We’re primarily focusing on unique costumes today. While I acknowledge Logan’s multiple white tank tops and jeans looks, we won’t be evaluating each individual outfit. Similarly, we won’t be assessing every minor variation of the black leather suits from the original X-Men movies, as they didn’t undergo significant changes from one appearance to another, maintaining their core design.

In our review, we’ll begin by acknowledging an exceptional alternate ending for The Wolverine, which deserves special recognition before delving into the main rankings. This unique conclusion featured a stylish, brown costume with a mask that Logan opened up, giving it a striking appearance. However, Hugh Jackman never donned the suit in the film, and since then, it has only been seen once. Due to its brief screen time, we’ve categorized it as an honorable mention.

12: The On-Screen Version of Logan, Uber Driver

11: Discussing the comics version of Old Man Logan, although the film version provided us with its interpretation, the character’s more common depiction in comics first appeared in a brief appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine. Here, we catch a glimpse of various Wolverine incarnations, including the one dressed in a brown trench coat and a brown hat – similar to the original Old Man Logan from the comics. This distinctive look has become quite popular, so it was delightful to witness this version being given its rightful recognition on the big screen.

10: One well-known incarnation of Logan from the comics is his covert identity, Patch, which was also presented in Deadpool and Wolverine on the big screen. In the comic books, due to helping Jessica Drew in Madripoor, Logan had to conceal himself and took on the appearance with a white suit jacket and eyepatch. The movie portrays this look as well, even though it may not rank among his top film costumes, it’s still an exciting reference that longtime Wolverine enthusiasts appreciated seeing on screen.

9: White Tank Top and Jeans In this instance, we’ve compiled different renditions of a specific style into a single ranking. Across multiple films, such as Logan, Wolverine has portrayed his classic comic book look featuring a white tank top and jeans. The version that stands out most in the films is arguably from X2: X-Men United, though this is partly due to the memorable scene it’s associated with (a personal favorite in the series). This iconic comic book style translates beautifully on screen, making it worthy of a place on our list.

8: The Appearance of Wolverine’s Brown Coat Across Different FilmsJust like Wolverine’s iconic brown coat, it has been presented in various styles throughout several movies such as X-Men, Wolverine: Origins, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. While there are distinct differences, particularly the ’70s aesthetic in Days of Future Past, the version from Wolverine: Origins managed to integrate multiple elements effectively, even though the movie itself didn’t fully embody this style.

7: Weapon X Among Wolverine’s various appearances throughout the years, none have been as emblematic of the character as Weapon X. Although we’ve caught brief glimpses of Logan’s past in other movies, this is the first instance where this renowned look has been vividly and truthfully depicted on screen, even with modifications to the helmet. The iconic nature of the look elevates it in our rankings, but as a costume, it’s essentially just some pouches and a large helmet, which is why it’s not ranked higher.

In the upcoming stop, we’re going to encounter “The Wolverine” movie, where our protagonist, Logan, adopts a sleek black suit and jacket ensemble. Instead of his usual leather attire, he dons this stylish all-black outfit that truly stands out during action sequences. The choice fits perfectly with the film’s darker tone and increased violence, making it an unexpected yet delightful addition to our cinematic experience.

5: Authentic Black Wolverine Suit Let’s talk about the iconic black suit that marked the beginning of Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine. Initially, the X-Men team members wore black leather costumes with subtle splashes of color, and for Wolverine, his suit had a slender orange trim. This costume was worn by Wolverine in X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand. While there were slight alterations between the suits, the fundamental design remained consistent. Over time, our perception of this costume has evolved, but it continues to hold a significant place in the hearts of many fans and will likely always do so.

In this list ranking movie costumes, Deadpool and Wolverine from the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline are definitely among the top contenders. However, it’s important to note that they don’t dominate every position on the list. This entry might stir some debate, depending on how much fans appreciate the Age of Apocalypse universe. In Deadpool’s quest to find Wolverine, we encounter the Age of Apocalypse variant, called Weapon X. This version is easily recognizable by his red and blue suit, his hand stump, and his hair, which is even wilder than usual. For the first time ever, this iconic look from the comic books made its big-screen debut in this scene. It would have been fantastic to see Jean Grey or Cyclops from the Age of Apocalypse alongside him, but I’m not at all disappointed with what we got.

In my previous statement, I mentioned that not all of the top spots would be occupied by Deadpool or Wolverine, and one such spot goes to X-Men: Days of Future Past armor. In the dystopian future portrayed in the film, Wolverine sports an armored costume that harmoniously blends the traditional black theme with splashes of color, creating a visually appealing and modern interpretation of the character for this timeline. The predominantly dark colors align with the bleak setting, yet there are subtle yellow and blue accents on the arms to provide contrast. Despite its functional design, it retains an element of style and was my favorite Wolverine suit worn by Jackman at that time.

Among all the Deadpool and Wolverine appearances, the standout was undeniably Logan donning his iconic brown costume, complete with a classic comic book scene to boot. A notable moment showcased the legendary clash between Logan and The Hulk, replicating the renowned cover of The Incredible Hulk #340. Despite being created for a mere scene in the movie at an astonishing cost of $100,000, the brown suit certainly delivered visually. To be honest, it was money well spent, as fans now have the chance to witness one of Wolverine’s most iconic looks on-screen at last.
