As a lifelong Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless superhero franchises, I must say that the ongoing saga of Blade feels like a rollercoaster ride I never wanted to get on. The character is iconic, and Wesley Snipes’ portrayal remains unparalleled in my eyes.

One of the very best jokes in Marvel’s smash-hit Deadpool & Wolverine is starting to feel less like a joke and more like somebody reading tea leaves. The film features the return of Wesley Snipes as Blade, reprising his role from the beloved trilogy of solo Blade movies that began back in 1998. When a reference to alt-universe Blades is made, Snipes’ Daywalker simply replies, “There’s only ever been one Blade. Only ever gonna be one Blade.”

The humor here is multi-faceted: The reboot of Blade, featuring Mahershala Ali, has faced hurdles in its development since 2019. It’s amusing that Deadpool and Wolverine, also Marvel Studios productions, are poking fun at another Marvel Studios production – one that’s currently grappling with difficulties. Additionally, it adds a nice touch to the character dynamics, reminding us of Snipes’ iconic portrayal of the Daywalker.

Speaking of it, with Deadpool and Wolverine’s DVD release this week, following their theatrical premiere months ago, the situation regarding Marvel’s Blade reboot unfortunately doesn’t seem to be improving; instead, it appears to have worsened further.

Over the summer, director Yann Demange parted ways with the Blade project. Since then, additional screenwriters have been enlisted to work on a script that has undergone significant transformations in recent years. The latest addition to the team is Eric Pearson, who has previously worked on Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts for Marvel’s Blade, making it the sixth potential writer on this project.

The main actors in the film have undergone significant changes during production. Originally cast members Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre, who was recently announced as DC’s new Green Lantern, have both departed from the project named Blade. At this point, only Ali and Mia Goth are still listed in the cast.

This week, it seemed inevitable that Disney would remove “Blade” from their upcoming release plans, given the unrealistic timeline of a November 2025 release without a director assigned. Moreover, Disney CEO Bob Iger had earlier indicated during an earnings call that the company would be prioritizing only three Marvel cinematic releases per year in theaters. Already scheduled for 2025 are “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As a passionate fan, I must acknowledge that delays in the production of “Blade” are not due to any shortcomings on the studio’s part or those associated with the film. Regrettably, a global pandemic and industry-wide strikes have halted productions since the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Despite appearing set to start last year, the strikes paused progress, and unfortunately, it remains stagnant even now.

Despite the challenges being unavoidable, it’s important to note that they aren’t the only factors preventing Blade from release. Over the past few years, an abundance of stories and rumors have circulated about Marvel’s diverse strategies for this film, which, in theory, should be relatively simple. While these reports should be met with skepticism, there have been far too many to dismiss entirely, especially given the high number of writers who have departed from the project.

It seems that Marvel Studios and the creative minds behind the film “Blade” have yet to find a storyline they’re satisfied with, putting the project in a similar position as its beginning. Eric Pearson is currently drafting a script aimed at meeting the expectations of Kevin Feige, Mahershala Ali, and an unnamed director (with rumors suggesting Demange remains attached). At present, “Blade” lacks a release date, with the coming years primarily centered on the “Avengers: Secret Wars” storyline.

As a movie critic, I’m blown away by the lightning-fast production of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming vampire blockbuster, “Sinners.” Unlike the long-in-the-works “Blade,” this film has managed to leapfrog through the stages of writing, pitching, casting, shooting, and soon releasing in a remarkably short span of time. Not tied to an established franchise or intellectual property, “Sinners” hasn’t had to navigate the same labyrinthine approvals and oversight as a Marvel production, but even so, it’s impressive to witness such a swift and smooth process in action.

At a certain point, you may find yourself questioning whether Wesley Snipes was onto something when he played characters like Deadpool and Wolverine. He’s the only Blade we’ve seen on the big screen so far, and it doesn’t seem like another actor will be stepping into those shoes anytime soon.
