As a 90s kid who grew up with Cartoon Network’s golden era, I can wholeheartedly say that the return of Regular Show is music to my ears! The original series was a game-changer for me; it was like a breath of fresh air amidst the sea of live-action shows that the network was experimenting with during that time. Regular Show was the perfect blend of humor, character development, and wacky adventures that kept me hooked week after week.
The classic series Regular Show is planning a comeback with a fresh animated spinoff. To truly thrive, this new sequel should focus on creating an enjoyable experience for fans. The original Regular Show was instrumental in Cartoon Network’s transformation during the 2010s, as it was on the brink of unprecedented success with shows like Adventure Time. As Cartoon Network was recovering from its foray into live-action productions, it desperately needed more hits that could replicate the impact of shows released in the 90s and early 2000s.
In an ideal timing, Regular Show emerged. Not only did it appeal to a broader audience, but it also served as a reunion for older animation enthusiasts who found themselves attracted back to Cartoon Network by the innovative aspects of their contemporary programming. While the series delivered zany entertainment and humor, its success came from its ability to serialize stories and weave together longer narratives. The conclusive ending of Regular Show is one of its defining features, making a sequel an interesting challenge. A successful sequel should build upon the original’s foundation without attempting to redefine it or discard what made it successful in the first place.
Regular Show’s Sequel Has the Right Idea
It appears that the concept for the official sequel series of Regular Show is “Regular Show Lost Tapes.” As evidenced by a job listing for the currently in production continuation, the title suggests that instead of following events after the original series finale, it will focus on previously unseen adventures of Mordecai and Rigby during their early 20s while they’re back at the park. Since the final episode showed that everything was a “Regular Show” being watched on a cosmic VHS tape by Pops.
As a dedicated fan, I’m speculating that the title “Lost Tapes” might hint at a cosmic observer delving into more tapes from the series, giving the creative team a chance to dive back into the world of Regular Show without fretting too much about maintaining the continuity. However, this approach may mean we lose some of the deeply emotional character development that fans have come to appreciate over the series, as Mordecai and Rigby’s stories concluded. Yet, it seems like the most logical choice for a sequel, as it’s difficult to envision Regular Show without its dynamic duo, Mordecai and Rigby, in their original roles.
Mordecai and Rigby Shouldn’t Change
Previously, Mark Hamill hinted at his reappearance in the upcoming Regular Show spin-off, playing the role of Skips once more. However, it’s challenging to predict the direction of the sequel solely based on the return of Skips. If the new episodes are set during the gap between the original series timeline, Skips would naturally be present. Similarly, he’d likely appear in a similar capacity if the story unfolded years later because his character doesn’t undergo significant changes. Skips serves as a utility role, and it’s essential to note that his presence is distinct from how the sequel may utilize Mordecai and Rigby. Unfortunately, their friends find themselves dealing with Mordecai and Rigby still struggling to adjust as adults.
The biggest appeal of Regular Show was seeing how Mordecai and Rigby would get into its wild shenanigans because of their young impulse. The series ended with the two of them growing into fine adults with their own families, and a sequel just can’t do that. It can’t be entirely different and introduce new characters for their roles, Regular Show needs Mordecai and Rigby as they are. Even with how much the two changed as the seasons went on, they still got into wacky adventures as a result of their own follies.
In the heart of Regular Show, my daily grind with good ol’ Mordecai and Rigby turns into a rollercoaster ride as the craziest stuff unfolds in each episode. One moment it’s a simple attempt to create a viral video, the next we’re launching into space after swiping Benson’s grilled cheese! It’s always us two, living our not-so-ordinary lives. If there’s going to be a follow-up to Regular Show, it needs to bring back the slightly hapless twentysomethings we adore, not their older selves.
