After having the opportunity to test various cases and accessories for the ROG Ally X during my recent flight, I must say that the JSAUX ModCase for ROG Ally X bundle has truly stood out as one of my favorites. As a passionate lover of handheld gaming devices, it’s only natural that I carry at least one with me when I travel. A few months back, I acquired the ROG Ally X, but due to its high cost, I had reservations about traveling with it due to fears of damaging the screen and buttons. Moreover, finding enough space in my luggage for a carrying case was challenging. However, a recent gift of the JSAUX ModCase bundle for the ROG Ally X, which includes a custom-fit case and a 65W portable charger, has transformed my travel experience entirely.
Recently, I journeyed to Seattle, Washington for a work engagement, and during my flights, I found myself entertained by utilizing my ROG Ally X, securely housed within the JSAUX ModCase, and connected to the JSAUX battery pack. This setup made for an incredibly convenient portable experience that I’ve yet to encounter. Here are some reasons why this accessory is fantastic.
JSAUX ModCase for ROG Ally X bundle: Price and availability
Among owners of the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go, JSAUX is a widely recognized brand due to their range of top-tier gaming handheld accessories available on Amazon and their official website.
The JSAUX ModCase functions as a compact protective covering for your handheld device, eliminating the need for a large carrying case during travel. The primary casing conforms snugly to the device and can be stretched over it easily. Additionally, a hard shell cover is included, which can be put on or taken off at will, providing essential protection for your screen, buttons, and joysticks. I was happily surprised to discover that this case features soft foam padding inside the cover, safeguarding the Ally X screen from scratches during transportation.
Generally, items from JSAUX, including their gaming handheld accessories, are often found on Amazon. However, at this moment, the specific ModCase Power Bank Kit for ROG Ally X is not available there. Instead, you can buy it directly from JSAUX for $79.99, but if you only need the case without the power bank, the cost drops to $29.99. Interestingly, these options are also offered for the regular ROG Ally (non-X) model in white. If you’re interested in the 65W Power Bank separately, it’s available on Amazon for $59.99.
JSAUX ModCase for ROG Ally X – What’s in the box?
When you buy the ModCase for ROG Ally X, it includes a custom-made case, some installation decals, a robust front cover with hard shell, a detachable kickstand, a removable battery strap, and the user manual. If you opt for the ModCase Power Bank Kit bundle instead, you will receive all of the above items plus an additional 20,000mAh fast-charging power bank (65W) that comes separately packaged.
JSAUX ModCase for ROG Ally X bundle: What I like
This minimalist yet efficient casing is quite appealing, as it required minimal setup time – just a matter of seconds. To install, all I needed to do was slot the bottom of the ROG Ally X into the ModCase, followed by using the blue stickers adhered to the top of the case to effortlessly stretch the form-fitting material over my handheld device. In comparison to my initial ROG Ally setup with a dBrand Killswitch case, this JSAUX accessory required significantly less effort during installation.
On top and at the back of the ModCase, there are openings for vents and access to various buttons and ports. This design ensures air circulation for my Ally X and provides easy reach to all its functions. Although some vent openings aren’t perfectly symmetrical, it doesn’t affect functionality in any way. Additionally, the textured surface of the ModCase enhances grip, reducing the risk of accidental slips.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve dabbled with several snug cases for gaming handhelds throughout the years, but what sets the JSAUX ModCase apart is its cleverly designed attachment zone on the backside. With the two attachments that come with it, I can easily slide them on or off this slightly projecting area whenever needed. This connection point gives me a sense of security and robustness, so I don’t have to fret about accidental damage when swapping out attachments.
While casually moving around with my Ally X, I secured a compact, metal stand. This handy accessory keeps my Ally X upright at different angles without toppling under pressure from handling. It’s also collapsible when I don’t need it, making it more convenient than many built-in kickstands. Another plus is that it’s positioned centrally on the back of the ModCase, unlike most competitors who place it on one side. This central design keeps it out of my way more effectively.
Before embarking on my work trip by air, I changed the kickstand accessory with the battery pack strap on my device. Later, during the flight when the battery of my Ally X began to run low, I connected the JSAUX 65W fast charging battery pack to the ModCase and inserted the built-in USB-C into my Ally X. The battery pack’s cable fits snugly without straining, provided the ports are aligned properly. An added advantage of this battery pack is that it can also function as a kickstand, holding my handheld device upright without additional support from me.
By arranging things this way, I comfortably positioned my ROG Ally X on the fold-down table and immersed myself in Ghost of Tsushima without putting any strain on my arms. Whenever I was interested to check the remaining battery life in the power bank, it was effortless as all I had to do was simply flip the device over and glance at the percentage visible on the power pack’s display screen.
Additionally, after I stopped using my handheld device and needed it to charge, I inserted its hard shell front cover and surprisingly found that I could still connect the USB-C cable into Ally X’s charging port. Interestingly, just one of Ally X’s dual USB-C ports can be accessed with the cover on, but it remains a highly practical and protective accessory nonetheless.
The 20,000mAh battery pack boasts a convenient design, fitting snugly behind the handheld device. It offers two USB-A ports and a multi-functional USB-C port, which can both receive and send power, as well as an additional USB-C port that serves only for secure storage of the built-in USB-C cable during travel. Similar to many battery packs, it needs you to press a button on the side before charging can commence.
JSAUX ModCase for ROG Ally X bundle: What I don’t like
The JSAUX ModCase for your ROG Ally X gaming handheld doesn’t have any hidden drawbacks; it feels robust and well-crafted throughout. However, similar to many gaming accessory designs, while installation is straightforward, taking the case off might prove challenging. Consequently, this product may not be ideal if you frequently need to remove your ROG Ally X from the casing. The included blue stickers are provided for this purpose. To take off the form-fitting casing, wrap these stickers around the slim material covering the top bumper, then carefully pull it off, as it fits quite securely and can be tricky to remove due to its snugness.
Beyond this, carrying the Portable Charging Kit will make the handheld device slightly heavier. The 65W power bank itself weighs approximately 0.96 pounds (436g), which combines with the ROG Ally X’s 1.5 pounds (678g) for a total weight of about 2.46 pounds (1,114g). Although this isn’t excessively heavy, some users may find it to be hefty and potentially uncomfortable over extended periods. However, if you play the device on a table, like I did during my flight, then you won’t notice the additional weight since you’re not carrying it.
JSAUX ModCase for ROG Ally X bundle: Competition
Previously, I reviewed a handheld case from dBrand, similar to the one used in my ROG Ally review. Since then, they’ve launched a Killswitch for the ROG Ally X, which I’m looking forward to reviewing. Based on my experience with the original Ally, I can recommend this protective casing as an excellent option for those seeking a more compact travel case instead of a bulky carrying case.
Compared to the JSAUX ModCase, the Killswitch features a permanent kickstand and doesn’t offer a battery pack attachment bundle. However, you can customize its appearance with various skins when buying the Killswitch for ROG Ally X. The Essential Kit costs $59.95 at dBrand, while the Travel Kit retails for $74.95 on the same platform.
