As a dedicated gamer with a rich history of traversing various gaming platforms, I find Microsoft’s recent move to expand its Xbox games onto competing consoles like PlayStation and Nintendo Switch a truly exciting development. Having grown up with the original Xbox and transitioned through generations, I’ve always appreciated the unique experiences that each console offers.
This year, Microsoft expanded its efforts to bring Xbox games to rival platforms such as PlayStation and Nintendo, a move that was highlighted by CEO Satya Nadella in his annual shareholder letter. The strategy aligns with Nadella’s vision for the Xbox brand, which emphasizes increased accessibility, particularly following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Although Nadella did not disclose specific games that might transition from Xbox to PlayStation or Nintendo, it’s clear that more titles could be on the way beyond what is currently available.
Through our acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, completed in October 2023, we’ve significantly expanded our gaming community by adding hundreds of millions of players. Currently, we boast 20 blockbuster franchises that have collectively earned over $1 billion throughout their lifetime. This includes popular titles like Candy Crush, Diablo, Halo, Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, and Gears of War. Furthermore, we’re continually pushing the boundaries with Xbox cloud gaming to provide players with new ways to engage with their favorite games on their terms. Lastly, we’ve made four of our beloved titles available on Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation for the very first time, as part of our commitment to broaden our content across various platforms. Nadella mentioned four games: Pentiment, Grounded, Sea of Thieves, and Hi-Fi Rush. These games are available on PlayStation, with Grounded and Sea of Thieves also released on Switch. There’s speculation about a more powerful Nintendo console coming out in 2025, and it’s possible that Sea of Thieves could be ported to this new system, often referred to as “Switch 2,” given its success on PS5. Rumors have swirled around Hi-Fi Rush potentially landing on a Nintendo console, but since Microsoft no longer owns the rights, the decision may now rest with Krafton, the current owner of the game.

Apart from the games mentioned earlier, we anticipate that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be available on PlayStation 5 by 2025. There’s speculation that it might also come out for Switch 2, but Nintendo has yet to confirm this, so Microsoft’s plans remain uncertain. As for what comes next, only time will tell, but Microsoft has plenty of exciting games up its sleeve, waiting to be introduced to new players. Series like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza have traditionally been exclusive to Xbox, leading to discussions about whether Microsoft might eventually make them available on other systems. Some fear this could diminish the long-term appeal of Xbox consoles, but it could also expose these franchises to a much wider audience.
