As a longtime fan of comic book movies, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the prospects of Venom: The Last Dance. With its lower-than-expected domestic opening, I found myself sharing that sentiment with many other fans. However, the international success of this film has been nothing short of phenomenal!

The Last Dance, was not anticipated to meet the high box office earnings achieved by previous films in the franchise. Initially, it was projected that the film would earn approximately $65 million domestically during its opening weekend. However, contrary to expectations, the movie performed significantly worse in North America, but surprisingly saw a strong international response that improved its overall opening figures.

“Venom: The Last Dance” earned only $51 million in the U.S. over the weekend, significantly lower than its previous movies’ opening weekends of $80-$90 million. However, international viewers came to the rescue for Sony, as they contributed more to the film’s overall earnings.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on the latest blockbuster from Sony, “Venom.” The film’s global debut was nothing short of spectacular, raking in an impressive $175 million worldwide, with a whopping $124 million coming from 64 international markets. This international success significantly bolsters the movie’s profitability, as its production budget is reportedly around $100 million. All in all, it seems like another lucrative venture for Sony’s Venom franchise.

It’s quite astonishing that the unexpected triumph of “Venom” during its debut weekend lies primarily in its remarkable performance in China. “The Last Dance” garnered an impressive $46 million over a five-day span in China, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood release of the year so far in the country. Moreover, it’s also the most successful opening for a superhero movie in China since “Spider-Man: Far From Home” in 2019.

In 2024, only Disney’s Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine had stronger international debuts than Venom: The Last Dance, indicating a successful overseas run for the movie. This strong performance overseas compensated for its less-than-impressive domestic opening, which might have been detrimental to Sony’s Symbiote franchise if it hadn’t recovered as it did.

It appears Tom Hardy may be ready to depart from the Venom series following the trilogy, but based on the movie’s developments, it seems Sony is eager to keep exploring the Venom/Symbiote universe. Characters like Knull have been positioned as potential significant antagonists for future films, and other major Symbiotes were hinted at for further storytelling opportunities.

If the worldwide debut of “Venom: The Last Dance” had mirrored its domestic release trends, Sony may have found it necessary to shelve their plans for this film. However, with such a tremendous global success, it’s evident that they recognize there’s still a vibrant world to explore when it comes to Venom and Knull.
