As a dedicated gamer who has experienced both triumphs and disappointments within the realm of video games, I find myself intrigued by the prospect of a potential Anthem reboot. Having fond memories of my time spent exploring the beautiful yet flawed world of Freelancers, hearing the enthusiasm of Ben Irving, a former producer on the game, reignites that spark of hope in me.
A developer who previously worked on Anthem at BioWare has expressed his aspiration to revive the game someday. Generally speaking, Anthem was a significant disappointment for both BioWare and its publisher, Electronic Arts. Upon its debut in early 2019, Anthem struggled to maintain an audience, eventually causing BioWare to abandon their plans for additional content in 2021. Despite the lack of enthusiasm from gamers to see the cooperative shooter return, one prominent figure hasn’t given up on the possibility of a revival in the future.
In a recent conversation on platform X, Ben Irving – former producer of Anthem – voiced his enthusiasm for reviving the IP. This comment came after a fan mentioned playing Anthem online again. The community responded warmly to Irving’s desire for a comeback of Anthem, despite its brief tenure. Fans who had enjoyed the game expressed their positive sentiments and excitement about the potential return.
As a fellow admirer, I share Irving’s sentiment: “One day, I too dream of revisiting Anthem.” It’s astounding to see such enduring enthusiasm for Anthem, even after all these years. Anthem still holds immense potential, waiting to be tapped into.
In essence, the possibility of EA and BioWare reviving Anthem seems quite remote. The game faced numerous issues across various aspects, causing significant problems for both EA and BioWare. With a hefty price tag estimated in millions of dollars to develop, it underperformed commercially, disappointing EA’s expectations. Furthermore, the focus on Anthem diverted BioWare from their flagship series, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
It’s important to mention that Irving is no longer employed by BioWare, and since he has moved on to work at Crystal Dynamics, where he is managing the upcoming Tomb Raider title, his personal wish to resurrect the franchise may not hold much influence within BioWare.
Would you be excited if Anthem were to return someday? Should Electronic Arts (EA) revive this franchise, or is it better left to rest? Share your thoughts and join the conversation on Twitter using @MooreMan12.
