Cronos: The New Dawn Takes Inspiration from Dead Space

As a seasoned gamer with years of horror gaming under my belt, I can’t help but get excited about Bloober Team’s latest project, Cronos: The New Dawn. Having grown up on classics like Resident Evil, Dead Space, and Alan Wake, it’s heartening to see a new game that seems to be drawing from the best of these titles.

Following the triumphant critical and sales performance of “Silent Hill 2”, developer Bloober Team has unveiled their upcoming project – a survival horror game titled “Cronos: The New Dawn”. This new title features a science fiction setting and a time-travel narrative, promising a unique gaming experience compared to the studio’s previous works. However, the developer has hinted that certain classic survival horror games serve as their inspiration.

In a recent chat with IGN, co-directors Jacek Zieba and Wojciech Piejko disclosed that the horror game “Dead Space” is one of the influences behind “Cronos: The New Dawn.” Specifically, according to Zieba, much like the dismemberment mechanics in “Dead Space,” as well as the flashlight function in “Alan Wake,” the combat system in “Cronos” will also prominently feature a key gameplay element that Bloober Team will discuss further at a later time.

Zieba mentioned, “Absolutely, Dead Space is part of our game due to its compelling protagonist and other elements. We’re excited to reveal a unique combat strategy similar to the limb-cutting mechanic in Dead Space. Additionally, similar to how Alan Wake features a flashlight, we too have an interesting aspect that we will unveil later.

As a gamer, I’d say: “I’ve got to hand it to the developers; they’ve crafted an experience that really ratchets up the suspense. It’s not just about blindly charging forward, but requires some strategic thinking when it comes to combat. They’ve definitely leveled up the gameplay with a touch of strategy.

In his remarks, Zieba mentioned that the Resident Evil game titles, both original and remade versions, served as an incredibly influential source of inspiration for the development team. He further explained that in addition to these, classic Japanese survival horror games similar to Resident Evil series were also a massive inspiration.

Cronos: The New Dawn is due out next year for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
