Hideo Kojima Hopes His Games Are Appreciated Centuries From Now

As a devoted follower of Hideo Kojima‘s extraordinary career, I am consistently awestruck by his visionary approach to gaming. His ability to create immersive, thought-provoking experiences that resonate with players for generations is nothing short of remarkable.

Through numerous “Metal Gear” series titles and “Death Stranding,” Hideo Kojima has crafted games that are often hailed as some of the best ever made. It’s undeniable that his creative influence within the gaming world has been substantial, to put it mildly. His commitment to creating a lasting impact is evident, and in a recent interview with Anan News, he spoke about this very topic.

Kojima expressed that he won’t release a game unless he wholeheartedly believes in it. He further compared this process of creating games to art, suggesting that just as art can continue to be admired for centuries, so too can video games. His hope is that his creations will one day be appreciated to such an extent that, in the far future, even an alien might find them amazing.

Initially, the manner in which art is assessed evolves over time, Kojima noted (translation courtesy of Automaton Media). “Much like paintings are valued a century or two following an artist’s demise, games and films too will endure as items to be inherited by future generations after their creators have moved on. If I craft something I’m proud of, it could potentially impress extraterrestrials centuries from now, saying ‘that’s impressive.’ To me, that’s the essence of creating something lasting.

As a member of Kojima Productions, I’ve got my hands full! We’re deep into the development of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” for PS5, and we’re also working on a chilling horror game called “OD” for Xbox. Simultaneously, we’re collaborating with Sony on an espionage title called “Physint.” And let me tell you, the excitement doesn’t stop there – a Death Stranding movie is in the pipeline as well! It’s an exhilarating time to be part of this creative powerhouse.
