- Microsoft EVP and Consumer CMO, Yusef Mehdi has commented on the future of Surface in a recent interview.
- When asked where he thinks Surface might go next, Mehdi suggests the company is fascinated by wearable AI technology that can see the world.
- Gadgets like smart glasses or the Humane AI pin may be where the company is headed next with Surface.
As a tech enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I find Microsoft’s potential foray into wearable AI technology intriguing. Having seen the rise and fall of numerous smart devices throughout the years, I can’t help but be a bit skeptical about their success in this new venture. However, if anyone has the resources and expertise to make it work, it’s Microsoft.
It appears that Microsoft could potentially delve into the realm of wearable AI technology using their Surface brand in the future, based on a recent interview with Yusef Mehdi, Microsoft’s EVP and Consumer CMO. In his conversation with YouTuber Austin Evans, Mehdi hinted at the possibility that Microsoft is open to investigating technology associated with wearable devices.
When queried about potential areas that Mehdi believes Surface should concentrate on in the future, he offers his insights.
I believe that wearable devices, which provide a view of the world and are worn on your body, will be incredibly useful when combined with AI. These devices can recognize images, inform you about what’s happening, and even converse with you. I find this an intriguing direction our technology might take us.
So far, wearable AI technology has had its ups and downs. For instance, products such as the Humane AI pin didn’t fare well at launch, with a high price point and less than satisfactory performance. However, there are successful examples like Meta’s Ray Ban glasses or X-REAL smart glasses, which have received positive feedback and seem to be quite trendy among users.
It’s uncertain which specific wearable technology areas Microsoft intends to delve into. The company has previously experimented with wearables, such as the Surface Headphones, Surface Earbuds, HoloLens, and Microsoft Band. However, all these product lines have been discontinued, leaving us curious about what new direction Microsoft may take in the realm of wearable tech.
Exploring the development of a wearable device like a Copilot pin or glasses, branded under the Surface name, could be an intriguing direction for Microsoft to take. However, if Microsoft believes that wearable artificial intelligence technology will shape the future, it must venture into this domain to remain competitive in the AI sector. To establish Copilot as a formidable competitor alongside Siri, Gemini, ChatGPT, and others, experimentation in this realm is necessary.
