As a movie buff with over three decades of cinema under my belt, I must say that Venom: The Last Dance has left quite an impression on me. While it may have wrapped up Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock saga, the introduction of Imperium and Knull, the “King in Black,” has opened a Pandora’s box of possibilities for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

In “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” Tom Hardy’s character Eddie Brock may have wrapped up a trilogy, but it certainly paved the way for exciting expansions within Sony’s Spider-Man universe. The third installment unveiled Knull, the ominous new adversary known as “The King in Black,” who is the deity of symbiotes. On the opposing side, we see the emergence of “Imperium,” a crucial new faction subtly introduced in the movie.

From the storyline and conclusion of Venom: The Last Dance, it’s evident that there’s a lot more potential for Imperium within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as hinted at during its first appearance.

Venom 3: What Is Imperium?

Just putting it out there: it feels like Venom: The Last Dance director Kelly Marvel and editor Mark Sanger cut a large portion from the movie, that gave more detail on The Imperium. What we do know is that the group is a mix of scientists led by Dr. Teddy Payne (Juno Temple) and military operatives, run by commander Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Strickland reports to a shadowy figure whom he communicates with over video chat, but the organization’s function is made clear: monitoring, tracking, and containing, studying, and/or neutralizing alien threats on Earth – specifically the symbiotes.

At the finale of Venom: The Last Dance, Area 51’s Imperium facility is reduced to ruins, leaving Payne and Strickland’s teams severely depleted, as most of their soldiers, guards, and researchers perished in the fight against Knull’s Xenophage creatures. However, given that Imperium appears to be a worldwide operation, it’s likely that the destruction of one base won’t eliminate the organization entirely.

During the Battle of Area 51, Strickland met his end, whereas Dr. Payne took the daring step of merging with a speedster symbiote suit, christening herself “Agony.” Equipped with her newfound abilities and armor, Payne managed to rescue research scientist Sadie Christmas (portrayed by Clark Backo), who had momentarily bonded with another symbiote but lost it in the melee. Both Payne and Christmas understand from personal experience that Knull remains a menacing danger to the cosmos; moreover, they recognize that Earth’s only hope for salvation lies in the symbiotes, who may serve as our last viable allies against this persistent threat.

What Is Imperium’s Role In Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

Venom 3: What Is Imperium’s Role in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

Currently, Imperium appears to function as a protective force for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The initial storyline event is the Marvel’s King in Black crossover, where Venom, Spider-Man, and other Marvel heroes joined forces against Knull and an invasion of symbiotes.

The main uncertainty remains: Will the Knull and the King in Black saga be confined to the Spider-Man universe created by Sony, or will it potentially unfold across the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe too?

If we consider “King in Black” as a potential storyline that could unite characters from the SSU (Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and the Madame Web Spider-ladies), Imperium might resemble Amanda Waller’s A.R.G.U.S. in the DC Universe – a secretive organization with a stern leader who manipulates the violent, unstable SSU characters into teaming up against Knull. Meanwhile, on the opposing side of the conflict could be the Spider-Man that Sony is planning to introduce within the SSU, collaborating with a group consisting of other Spider-people such as the Spider-Girls/Spider-Women whose origins have been laid out in Madame Web, or live-action adaptations of Spider-Verse characters like Nic Cage’s Spider-Man Noir from the upcoming Spider-Noir TV series.

Among Imperium, the so-called beasts from the SSU, and the Spider-family, there’s enough action to turn “King in Black” into a genuine movie event. However, at this point (during the time of writing), Sony hasn’t yet managed to weave a unified, interconnected narrative for the SSU across five (almost six) films. Therefore, it’s quite possible that Imperium will remain unheard from in the future.

Venom: The Last Dance is now in theaters.
