Saoirse Ronan’s Brutally Honest Take on Self-Defense Stuns Famous Men

As a woman who has walked this earth for more years than some of these gentlemen have been alive, I can wholeheartedly relate to Saoirse Ronan’s poignant remark during her recent interview. The stark reality she so eloquently pointed out – that women often have to consider their safety in ways men rarely need to – is a truth that has been etched into my consciousness since the day I first ventured out into the world alone.

Saoirse Ronan isn’t afraid to speak up, especially when it really matters.

On October 25th, during an episode of The Graham Norton Show featuring Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne, Denzel Washington, and themselves, the conversation turned to Eddie discussing the self-defense training he received for his upcoming TV series, The Day of the Jackal. It was then that Eddie shared an intriguing piece of information – a combat expert had instructed him on how to utilize his phone as a means of self-defense.

As a vigilant individual, I find myself pondering: who would be so caught off guard as to consider their phone first in the event of an attack? Being Paul, age 28, I mimicked reaching for my pocket where my phone usually resides. However, if confronted with a real threat, I’d assure you that my priorities lie elsewhere.

The group erupted in laughter, and host Graham Norton joined in, mocking the seemingly ridiculous circumstances, as the actress from Lady Bird tried to interject her thoughts.

Eddie, aged 42, acknowledged Paul’s remark as a “solid insight,” shortly followed by the 30-year-old actress providing her frank assessment.

She remarked, “This is something women often ponder,” causing a momentary halt among the men who were laughing. Addressing the audience, she asked, “Isn’t that correct, my fellow females?” to which they responded with applause.

That very day, the popular video was posted on X (previously recognized as Twitter), accompanied by the caption “Saorsie Ronan making us laugh – a sight for sore eyes”. Since then, it’s been watched more than 50 million times.

It’s a moment may of the Oscar nominee’s female fans relate to.

One individual responded with, “So absorbed by her, she effectively erases the smiles from others’ faces, and it feels incredibly rewarding,” while another commented, “Women put so much effort into ensuring their safety, which men often overlook. Kudos to you, Saoirse, for bringing this up.

I also included a third user, and their statement beautifully illustrates the essence of men being oblivious to male privilege. It’s almost chilling how these good-natured individuals can be so unaware. Thankfully, Saoirse is here to bring more light to this important topic.

A different user mentioned, “I’ve encountered a silent discomfort on multiple occasions in the presence of men. They perceive it as ruining the atmosphere, but it’s actually making them confront the truth following their thoughtless remarks, which reveal their lack of awareness.
