As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous beloved franchises, I must say the potential return of the Shrek series brings a sparkle of nostalgia to my eyes. John Lithgow’s confirmation that he is open to reprising his role as Lord Farquaad adds fuel to the fire, stoking the flames of anticipation among fans like myself.
The initial Shrek film revolutionized Dreamworks Animation in 2001, and the studio continues to aim at reviving the series today. Ever since 2017, there have been whispers of a fifth Shrek movie, and this year Eddie Murphy announced that he was developing not only another Shrek film but also a solo Donkey spinoff. This information ignited excitement among fans, and we’ve had occasional updates since then. However, the details were limited to the fact that Murphy, Myers, and Diaz would reprise their roles. Recently, recurring antagonist John Lithgow expressed his interest in returning…but he hasn’t been asked yet.
It’s natural to ponder if we’ve seen Lord Farquaad for the last time…or if they haven’t asked Lithgow yet. Given that he may not be a primary character, it’s plausible to think Lithgow wouldn’t spend as much time in the recording studio as the main characters do. Compared to Shrek and Donkey, Farquaad had fewer scenes across all movies.
That said — the clock is presumably ticking.
Over the summer, Murphy shared that he began working on the recording of “Shrek”, which is expected to be released in 2025. Additionally, they are planning to work on a character for Donkey next.
It’s been over a decade since Shrek Forever After — so long that some rumors had suggested the franchise is as likely to be full-on rebooted as continued. But with fans’ love for Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy int he roles, a reboot feels like it would be a hard sell. There could, at least in theory, be a middle ground where they reboot but keep the voice cast (think of how often that’s happened to Scooby-Doo!), but honestly, the critical and commercial success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish likely makes it hard to stray too far from the classic Shrek cast and storyline.
According to William Steig’s illustrative book “Shrek!”, the Shrek franchise was initiated in 2001, comprising four Shrek films as the main series, two standalone Puss in Boots spin-offs, along with numerous short movies and holiday specials produced for television and home viewing.
The Shrek series has earned over a billion dollars at the box office and additionally hundreds of millions from ancillary income and merchandise. This year, Kung Fu Panda’s return to cinemas hinted at DreamWorks’ commitment to rebooting some of their projects, increasing the likelihood that a new Shrek film is imminent.
The movie “Donkey” has been mentioned by Murphy previously, but there’s less solid information about it compared to the tales surrounding Shrek 5. If it indeed materializes, Donkey would be the second character, following Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots, to receive a standalone film. Puss in Boots initially appeared on screen in “Shrek 2” in 2004. Due to his immense popularity as a character, DreamWorks reintroduced him in more Shrek films and later gave him his own spinoff movie and an animated series.
