How the Venom Movies Can Continue – With or Without Tom Hardy

As a movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of comic book adaptations, I can confidently say that the Venom franchise is far from over, despite Tom Hardy’s apparent departure. The comics have shown us time and again that the Venom symbiote is not tied to one host, and Sony has the golden opportunity to explore this rich lore.

The movie “Venom: The Last Dance” implies it’s the conclusion for Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, but don’t be fooled – it doesn’t mean the Venom film series is wrapping up. On the contrary, speculation about Venom 3 has left some viewers puzzled, as this third installment actually introduces fresh storylines that could potentially stretch beyond just the Venom saga and into the broader playground of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. This includes a “King In Black” crossover event featuring Knull.

Sony could continue its Venom solo series even if Tom Hardy isn’t involved, given that the comic books have established a rich history and precedent for such spin-offs.

How Venom Movies Can Continue With or Without Tom Hardy

If Tom Hardy Resumes: Tom Hardy might have concluded his involvement in the Venom movie franchise as he’s tired of having to headline and produce movies where he delivers an intense dual performance. However, if Sony or even Marvel Studios approach him with a proposal for another Eddie Brock/Venom appearance in a potential crossover with Spider-Man, or a King in Black event film, he’s open to the opportunity.

In the comic book adaptation of King In Black, Eddie and Venom join forces with Spider-Man to battle Knull and his symbiote army encircling Earth, blocking it from sunlight. Eddie gains the title of King in Black by usurping Knull, sacrificing his humanity for godhood over the symbiotes. A “King in Black” movie might entail Sony’s dark anti-heroes such as Morbius and Kraven seeking out Tom Hardy’s character, Eddie Brock, to reunite him with Venom. This setup would allow Hardy a significant role within an ensemble cast, while still providing a grand finale and potentially setting the stage for a fresh storyline. It’s a scenario that could entice Hardy to reprise his role.

In the event Tom Hardy decides not to return, the Venom symbiote has a rich history in Marvel Comics with multiple major and temporary hosts. A character many Marvel enthusiasts are keen on seeing developed is “Agent Venom,” who is the symbiote worn by Peter Parker’s former tormentor, Flash Thompson. As a military personnel deployed to the Middle East, Flash sustained injuries resulting in the amputation of his legs. Later, he becomes part of “Project Rebirth,” which equips him with the Venom symbiote under strict conditions for use. This transformation makes him an elite covert operative. Eventually, Agent Venom breaks free from government control and evolves into a full-fledged hero, even adopting the role of “Agent Anti-Venom.” If Sony decides to reimagine Venom as an action-spy film with superhero undertones, it could follow the John Wick-Marvel hybrid formula that might lead to box office success!

In comic books, one significant character who bonded with the Venom symbiote is Mac Gargan, infamously known as the Scorpion and a longtime adversary of Spider-Man. During the mid-2000s, he took on the Venom persona, returning the character to his classic roots of villainy and chaos, involving himself in criminal activities and even consuming brains. Later, Norman Osborn enlisted Gargan’s Venom for his “Dark Avengers” team, posing as a new black-suited Spider-Man. This concept of a criminal disguising themselves as either Venom or Spider-Man could serve as an inspiration for the soft reboot in upcoming Venom films.

Finally, let’s not forget there’s still the classic Venom origin story that has yet to be done – the one where the symbiote suit first bonds with Peter Parker, and learns about all the spider powers that explain why Venom takes on the form he does. If any of the Spider-Man actors (Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire) takes over as the star of the next Venom movie, it’s already a guaranteed box office hit – even more so if Tom Hardy shows up wanting his suit back.
