Eddie Redmayne reflects on challenge of Day of the Jackal change from original

As a cinephile with decades of film-viewing under my belt, I must say that Eddie Redmayne’s take on The Day of the Jackal is not just another rehash but a fresh, intriguing exploration of a classic tale. The decision to set it in the present day and delve into the Jackal’s personal life adds layers to a character previously shrouded in mystery.

Eddie Redmayne discusses the alterations implemented in the spy thriller “The Day of the Jackal” for Sky’s fresh interpretation.

Back in 1973, I had the pleasure of witnessing the big-screen adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s gripping political thriller, a role brilliantly played by Edward Fox as the ruthless assassin, famously referred to as ‘The Jackal’.

Redmayne admitted that stepping into the role for Sky’s modern adaptation posed a significant challenge, given its contemporary setting, present-day backdrop, and major alterations – particularly regarding the main character.

In the most recent edition of TopMob, Redmayne shared that Edward Fox portrays an unyielding character in the film, serving as a channel for brutal charm for a full two hours. However, despite this powerful performance, there remains a lack of insight into his personal background.

In this version, you’ve committed to working for ten hours straight, which seems unsustainable. The notion of exploring his other aspects, like family life, presented something fresh, intriguing, and demanding. So, how can you reconcile these two different facets of him?

In fact, the character of the Jackal is depicted as having a hidden family residing in Spain and a fervent romantic involvement with partner Nuria, portrayed by renowned actress Úrsula Corberó from the series Money Heist.

The development adds a more human element to the otherwise cold-hearted character, while it also gives him something in common with his nemesis: MI6 agent Bianca, played by No Time to Die and Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch.

Redmayne commented: “It’s fascinating how, just when you believe you understand a person’s moral compass, it seems to change.

There’s a hazy, indistinct area inside each of us – we don’t always fit neatly into categories like ‘good’ and ‘evil’. These concepts aren’t as clear-cut as they might seem.

This week’s edition of TopMob features Eddie Redmayne, Lashana Lynch, along with other prominent figures, discussing more about The Day of the Jackal.
