As a long-time Marvel fan with a deep appreciation for both the animated and live-action adaptations of our beloved web-slingers, I am beyond excited about the emergence of Spider-Noir! The casting of the enigmatic Nic Cage as the gritty, noir version of Spider-Man has ignited speculation that we might be inching closer to a live-action Spider-Verse crossover.

The enigmatic “Spider-Noir,” starring Nicolas Cage, is causing quite a stir among Marvel enthusiasts and regular television viewers. As intrigue around Spider-Noir grows, so does the speculation about how this live-action series ties into Sony’s “Spider-Verse” animated movie franchise. Given that Cage portrayed the animated version of Spider-Man Noir in the film series and now stars in this live-action spinoff, it’s natural for fans to wonder if there’s a connection between the two.

Is Spider-Noir Setting Up A Live-Action Spider-Verse Crossover?

There’s been plenty of discussion about how Sony might conclude the animated Spider-Verse Trilogy with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The movies have focused on Miles Morales/Spider-Man (played by Shamiek Moore), a character that Marvel fans have long desired to see in live-action. Due to the multiverse themes in the Spider-Verse films, many believe the trilogy will wrap up with Miles and specific characters either joining or merging with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (currently involved in its own Multiverse Saga storyline), or having their individual universes further explored through live-action spinoffs like Spider-Noir. Every franchise eventually needs a climactic event, and when the Spider-Verse characters start appearing in live-action adaptations, it seems likely that we’ll see the grandeur of the animated films – including the imaginative stories and spider-character ensembles – brought to life on screen as well.

What’s fun about Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is that a live-action Spider-Verse crossover doesn’t have to happen on the scale of a blockbuster movie – it could be a TV event that runs through whatever shows Sony (along with Amazon/MGM) gets off the ground. If Sony wants to go big, then TV-level characters like Spider-Man Noir could be brought up to the theatrical movie level to be featured alongside movie marquee characters like Spider-Man or Venom. There are several ways to make Spider-Man TV and movie content feel more in synch in terms of quality and relevance, and establish some new character IPs along the way.

Will Spider-Man Noir’s Series Lead to a Live-Action Spider-Verse Crossover?

To kick things off: Regardless of how it stands now: The TV series titled Spider-Noir needs to thrive in order for the upcoming Sony Spider-Man Universe phase to sustain itself. So far, the movies have exhausted one trilogy (Venom) and introduced several new characters (Miles Morales, Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter), but they haven’t yet coalesced into a true shared universe or linked back to any of the previous live-action Spider-Man movies. In the sequel film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it was made clear that the multiversal Spider-Society is interested in the MCU, which could significantly increase the reach and anticipation associated with a live-action Spider-Verse crossover. If three versions of Spider-Man (including the one from Spider-Man: No Way Home) can rake in a billion dollars at the box office, consider what a Spider-Man MCU movie featuring live-action Spider-Verse characters (such as Nic Cage’s Spider-Man Noir) could accomplish as an event film?

If current trends continue, it seems possible that a live-action Spider-Verse movie could be made before the animated Spider-Verse trilogy is fully completed. Regrettably, this isn’t a jest.
