As a longtime fan of King of the Hill, I couldn’t be more excited about the news that this beloved animated series is coming back for a revival! It feels like just yesterday when we were watching Bobby Hill navigate his way through adolescence under the watchful eye of his redneck father Hank. The humor, the characters, and the small-town charm of Arlen are etched into my memory, and I can’t wait to see how the series evolves with the passage of time.
The popular animated series “King of the Hill” is set to make a comeback with a fresh revival series. This news was first announced in 2022, and by 2023, it was confirmed that production was underway for a Hulu release. With streaming services like Hulu bringing back classic animated shows such as “The Animaniacs” and “Futurama,” “King of the Hill” is the latest major series to return with new episodes for its modern run.
The current production for “King of the Hill” is underway with plans to reassemble a significant portion of the original voice actors. However, there will be notable departures from the original format, including the introduction of fresh characters, some of whom may replace or disappear altogether. Additionally, hints about these changes have been subtly dropped by the team during interviews over the last few years of development. With the new “King of the Hill” almost ready to air, it’s high time we gather all the information that has been disclosed about the upcoming series so far.
King of the Hill’s Revival Is Bringing Back the Original Cast
Based on the initial announcement for the reboot of King of the Hill, the original creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels will return. Saladin Patterson has been appointed as the showrunner, while Kathy Najimy, Stephen Root, Pamela Adlon, and Lauren Tom have confirmed their participation. At this point, it’s unclear which characters each actor will reprise, but the main cast is set. Regrettably, Johnny Hardwick, who provided the voice for Dale Gribble in the original series, passed away during production.
Previously, TVLine announced that Hardwick managed to record several episodes prior to his demise, but a definitive confirmation is still pending at this point in time. This ambiguity also extends to the future direction of King of the Hill, considering Dale’s prominent role in the original series. There are possibilities such as retiring the character or recasting, given Dale’s integral part within the heart of King of the Hill during its initial run. The same uncertainty applies to two other key members of the main cast as well.
Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty, who portrayed Luanne’s and Lucky’s singing counterparts, have unfortunately passed away since the initial broadcast of King of the Hill. Their characters played crucial roles within the show’s original narrative, so their absence may be noticeable moving forward. As for whether new actors will take over these roles in the upcoming series remains uncertain, but it seems likely that some character adjustments could be made given the significant time leap in the new season.
King of the Hill’s Revival Takes Place Nearly a Decade Later
In an interview with Movieweb, Pamela Adlon disclosed that in the revival of King of the Hill, Bobby Hill is now a 21-year-old chef living in Dallas. This information was further backed by the debut of the new design for adult Bobby Hill, which can be found online. Since the original series ended with Bobby being only 12, it’s been close to a decade since those events transpired. As Bobby has grown up and embarked on his career, all other characters have also been aged accordingly to maintain continuity.
This will be the best way the new King of the Hill series can address some of the character involvement issues. It’s a good way to write out Luanne and Lucky, and perhaps introduce several new characters to help fill in the gaps. Bobby working outside of the home also opens it up to new people in his environment as well, and the slate is opened with this time jump. It’s going to lead to a big shuffle of the main characters at the center of the series, and open it up to a new generation of stories outside of the Arlen setting.
Regarding Bobby’s professional path in the future, this is the initial piece of solid information hinting at character developments. Bobby has chosen to delve fully into his career as a robata chef in a restaurant, abandoning comedy for good. This decision stems from the last episode of the series where Bobby developed a deep affection for barbecue. However, Bobby’s preference for robata cooking, which predominantly utilizes charcoal, might cause tension with Hank due to his intense dislike for anything related to charcoal.
When Does King of the Hill Revival Premiere?
Regarding the upcoming premiere of “King of the Hill” episodes on Hulu, it seems they’ll be airing quite soon. Actor Stephen Root, who voices characters like Bill Dauterive, hinted that the team had started table readings last April. In the same interview, showrunner Mike Judge mentioned that the second season was already in production. Since then, production for the revival has been ongoing, suggesting a potential return of “King of the Hill” as early as 2025.
In the “King of the Hill” series, co-creator Greg Daniels shared that the team had been developing a new project before the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strikes last year. They had already read through two episodes and everyone was enjoying it, but then they all went on strike. After the strike ended, they were rewriting the third or fourth episode and receiving feedback on the first one. As for the production’s progress, Daniels mentioned that it was moving forward during a conversation last Fall.
According to Daniel’s predictions, the new series is expected to debut in early 2025. Given this timeline, a Spring 2025 release for the series seems plausible. As of now, we don’t have an exact date for when Futurama Season 13 will air. If production remains consistent, Hulu might unveil King of the Hill in the Spring and Futurama in the Summer. It’s also possible that they could switch the order, with Futurama premiering first, followed by King of the Hill shortly after. Regardless, it looks like we won’t have to wait much longer before King of the Hill makes its comeback.
