As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that these recent additions to Nintendo Switch Online are a delightful surprise. The nostalgia trip back to the N64 era is always welcome, and the opportunity to revisit classics like Shadow Man and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is something I eagerly embrace.
Nintendo Switch Online members, including those using Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, have been given a pleasant surprise with the addition of two free games to download. Yet, it’s important to note that these games were developed for the N64 console, meaning they can only be played if you have the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Regrettably, those without the Expansion Pack upgrade will not be able to access or download any N64 games made available through this service, and these two new games are no different.
The initial title we’re discussing is Shadow Man, a video game that came out in 1999 for PC, N64, and PS1. This production hails from Acclaim Studios Teesside. As the title indicates, it’s inspired by the Shadow Man comic book series published by Valiant Comics. It has developed quite a following and is often referred to as a cult classic. Despite receiving a 73 on Metacritic upon its release, it managed to spawn a sequel in 2002 titled Shadow Man: 2econd Coming. Interestingly, this follow-up was exclusive to the PS2.
A game from 1998 called Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, initially released for the N64 console through Nintendo Switch Online a year ago, is now available. This game is actually a sequel to another N64 game from 1997 titled Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Upon its release, it received an impressive rating of 89 on Metacritic and was widely recognized as one of the top games of that year.
Shadow Man:
He’s on his way, hunting criminals both here on Earth and in the afterlife. This man is possessed, with a voodoo mask embedded within him and energy lines running down his spine. Known as Shadow Man, he follows evil across the boundary between life and death. His mission: to prevent an apocalypse and save your soul.
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
After overpowering the Campaigner, Turok hurls the Chronocepter into a nearby volcano to eliminate it. Unfortunately, this action reawakens an even more dangerous entity – The Primagen. Once again, it falls upon another Turok to bring tranquility back to the realm and prevent the Primagen from merging Earth with the underworld.
It is important to note the two new N64 games are only available via the Mature 17+ version of Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online, which requires a separate download on the Nintendo eShop. Once downloaded, you have unlimited access to both games but only as long as you maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription. If your Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription lapses, you will access to the pair of games, and all other Nintendo Switch Online games, until you subscribe back up.
