As a seasoned gamer with over 30 years under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall of many beloved franchises. The Dragon Age series has always held a special place in my heart, so when I heard that The Veilguard was finally here, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation.
After a decade-long hiatus, the eagerly anticipated addition to the Dragon Age series, titled The Veilguard, is just a few days from its release.
Now that the review restrictions have been lifted, we’ve had a chance to observe global gaming critics’ responses to it.
In the sequel titled Veilguard, which follows after 2014’s Inquisition, you will assume the role of a personal character named Rook. Joined by other valiant heroes, your mission is to confront and vanquish a pair of malevolent Elven deities that have been awakened within the realm of Thedas, the setting from earlier games in the series, due to some unknown reason.
This game is created by BioWare, famous for developing Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Recently, their releases like Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda have received mixed reviews. So, we’re curious to see how The Veilguard will fare in this context.
Without further ado, let’s find out what reviews are saying about the game.
What is the Metacritic score for Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
The Metacritic review for Dragon Age: The Veilguard is predominantly positive, earning a score of 93 on Xbox Series X/S (from five evaluations), 84 on PS5 (from 51 assessments), and 80 on PC (based on 23 reviews).
Based on the current number of reviews, The Veilguard appears to be comparable in rating to its predecessor games, Dragon Age: Inquisition (with a score of 85) and Dragon Age: Origins (with a score of 86).
The scores for all these games are somewhat greater than the 79 rating that Dragon Age 2 received on Xbox 360.
While the audience score is yet to come, things are looking positive for The Veilguard.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard review round-up
Explore various online sources to discover Dragon Age: The Veilguard reviews, and you’ll come across many critics expressing their eloquent thoughts about the game. Generally, the scores are favorable, but it’s essential to understand what aspects they are commending or criticizing. Here, we have compiled a few insights for your perusal.
According to Paul Tassi from Forbes, the game received an 8.5 out of 10 overall. Despite not being a fan of previous games in the series, he was eager to delve deeper into The Veilguard. Although it could have benefited from some editing, additional gameplay depth, and potentially improved writing at times, it excelled in several areas and I had a good time playing it.
In a 9/10 review by IGN’s Simon Cardy, he pointed out that the game’s level design stood out to him, evoking memories of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game for the writer.
He mentioned that the intricately designed, winding passages with hidden alcoves offer a delightful exploration experience, and these areas are ingeniously connected in such a way that shows how a role-playing game in the BioWare style can maintain its strengths while giving up the concept of a completely open world.
At Eurogamer, associate editor Robert Purchase gave the game a perfect five stars, labeling it as “the best BioWare game I’ve ever experienced.” In his critique, he commended the game’s conclusion, stating that “it’s an all-time great; it left me speechless. It surpasses anything BioWare has previously achieved.
The game didn’t receive all top marks; Malindy Hetfeld from The Guardian gave it a 3 out of 5, which is still quite respectable. She admitted that the game isn’t terrible, but she had concerns about the writing style. Specifically, she found the writing, which was strong in previous games, to be rather ordinary this time around, and she felt that the new combat system got repetitive rather quickly.
At Video Games Chronicle, reviewer Jordan Middler gave a three-star review with a similar sentiment. In his write-up, he expressed that the main missions in Veilguard create an inconsistent gaming experience, as they transition from thrilling spectacles to tedious challenges.
I can hardly contain my excitement as the release date for Dragon Age: The Veilguard is just around the corner! I’ve always been captivated by the Dragon Age universe, and this new addition promises an immersive experience that I can hardly wait to dive into.
