As a dedicated fan who has watched “Trick ‘r Treat” multiple times on spooky Halloween nights, I can wholeheartedly say that I’m eagerly waiting for the sequel. The film’s unique blend of humor and horror, its tribute to All Hallow’s Eve traditions, and its independent spirit have made it a timeless classic in my book.
Since the initial announcement of a “Trick ‘r Treat” sequel, director Michael Dougherty has been occupied with projects like “Krampus” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.” However, despite the delays, Dougherty remains hopeful that fans shouldn’t completely lose faith. In a recent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release, as reported by Bloody Disgusting, Dougherty notes in a commentary track that the main reason for the delay is his desire to avoid any compromises or sacrifices that might impact his vision for the movie. As of now, it’s uncertain if there has been much progress on the sequel since he recorded the commentary.
In his comments, Dougherty expressed that he intends to work on it further, stating that it’s still very much alive and kicking. While there is definitely movement in the right direction, he emphasized that he won’t compromise or make sacrifices for a sequel. Instead, it needs to be under optimal conditions with sufficient resources; otherwise, he’s content with leaving it as this unique film that overcame numerous obstacles.
He added, “But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.”

In 2009, the first film was unveiled, paying homage to Halloween with its mix of comedy and terror. It offered an anthology-style experience that celebrated various traditions associated with October 31st. Back then, streaming services weren’t popular yet, so “Trick ‘r Treat” made its debut exclusively on home video, missing out on both a theatrical release and a premiere on streaming platforms. Since then, it has occasionally appeared on streaming services, which has cultivated a dedicated fanbase eager for a sequel.
Dougherty explained on the disc that our success with this project was somewhat precarious, as it felt like we successfully trapped lightning in a bottle. It was quite taxing, he noted. A lesser-known fact is that many beloved horror films, including those that launched new horror icons, were all independently produced. Dougherty mentioned other indie hits such as Halloween and Friday the 13th as examples. He stressed that there aren’t the usual benchmarks a studio can rely on to make it an easy “yes.” In the sequel, he was insistent that we should maintain the unconventional storyline and preserve the unique blend of horror and humor.
The latest news concerning the sequel, originally mentioned back in 2013, emerged last year from Dougherty. He expressed a similar sentiment, stating that he would only advance with a sequel if it could outshine the impact of the initial encounter.
Stay tuned for updates on the possible future of Trick ‘r Treat 2.
