What you need to know
- Gaming peripheral maker Turtle Beach has revealed its brand new Xbox controller that’s coming in November: the Stealth Pivot. It’s wireless and supports connectivity with a 2.4GHz dongle or Bluetooth across Windows PC, mobile, and smart TVs, though use with an Xbox console requires a wired connection.
- The Stealth Pivot is an advanced Xbox controller with revolving button modules, allowing you to swap between a traditional button layout and one ideal for fighting games.
- It also has four remappable buttons in total (two are on one of the fighting game layout modules), adjustable trigger locks and thumbstick tension, and a snazzy display that lets you read chat messages, adjust controller settings, and even tweak the audio of headsets you have connected to the gamepad.
- The Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot is expected to ship on November 26, 2024, with preorders available now. The controller has an MSRP of $129.99.
As a dedicated gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot controller has caught my attention like no other Xbox accessory in recent memory. The revolving button modules alone make it stand out from the crowd, offering an innovative solution for those who take their fighting game skills seriously.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve been impressed over the years by the innovative controller designs that Xbox and its partners have brought to the table. From Microsoft’s Elite Controller with additional back paddle buttons and a thumbstick tension key for precise long-range sniping, to the ASUS ROG Raikiri Pro’s onboard OLED display and RGB lighting, these controllers have pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible. Now, Turtle Beach is aiming to disrupt the market with its new Stealth Pivot gamepad, and with its unique standout feature, it has a strong possibility of becoming one of the best Xbox controllers ever made for both Xbox and Windows PC gaming.
This premium controller, the Stealth Pivot, offers standard features such as adjustable trigger locks and thumbstick sensitivity. However, what truly distinguishes it is its unique rotating buttons. Yes, you heard that correctly! The traditional layout of twin thumbsticks, a D-pad, ABXY inputs on the face remains unchanged. Yet, by manipulating switches at the back and pushing down the thumbsticks, you can rotate the button modules 180 degrees into the controller, revealing a second button arrangement on their reverse side. This fascinating transformation, demonstrated in this video, gives it a sleek, futuristic appearance reminiscent of gadgets from sci-fi films.
In this specific setup, the controller discards its thumbsticks in favor of LSB and RSB buttons, and relocates the D-pad where the left thumbstick used to be. On the right side of the controller, two new user-assignable P1 and P2 buttons take the place of the right thumbstick. This design is primarily intended for use with fighting games, and if the button quality is satisfactory, it should greatly benefit fans of that genre. It’s important to know that you can revert back to the standard layout by pressing down on the buttons when the module lock is turned off.
Apart from its lock mechanisms, thumbstick tension adjustment, and rotating button modules, the Stealth Pivot controller boasts two extra customizable buttons located at the back. This brings the total number of remappable buttons to four. Moreover, it features a vibrant, high-visibility screen placed above the Xbox button that shows battery status, displays messages from friends, and allows for independent button remapping without requiring Turtle Beach’s Control Center 2 app (although the controller can still be fine-tuned using this software on Xbox, Windows PC, or mobile devices).
One notable aspect of this gaming pad is its ability to boost the sound quality from connected headsets through four distinct equalization (EQ) presets and a feature Turtle Beach refers to as “Superhuman Hearing.” This essentially amplifies crucial in-game sounds such as footsteps and distant player interactions. Additionally, you can fine-tune settings like game audio volume, voice chat levels, and microphone monitoring (if your headset is compatible) using the controller’s display.
This screen on the controller is quite practical, offering more functionality than comparable panels found on devices such as the design-oriented Raikiri Pro. However, it does have a drawback: it significantly reduces battery life when used wirelessly with a PC, mobile device, smart TV, or any other platform that uses its 2.4GHz dongle or Bluetooth connection. A wired connection is necessary for use with an Xbox console due to Microsoft’s exclusive wireless technology. Turtle Beach claims the Stealth Pivot can last up to 20 hours on a single charge, compared to the 40 hours you get from controllers like Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Controller Series 2. Fortunately, it does support charging and playing simultaneously.
In summary, this controller appears promising based on initial impressions, but we can’t definitively comment on its quality until we physically own it. However, considering my positive experiences with Turtle Beach products in the past, I anticipate that the Stealth Pivot will rank among the top Xbox controllers for fighting game enthusiasts like those who play Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6.
The Stealth Pivot is projected to arrive towards the end of next month, specifically on November 26, 2024. This timing is perfect for holiday shopping! If you’re interested, you can preorder it now for $129.99 directly from Turtle Beach’s website, a link to which I’ve provided here and in the box below. It’s worth noting that while there might not be any Black Friday deals on this item, there could potentially be a small launch discount. Fingers crossed!
