As a gamer who has grown up with the Mortal Kombat series and its iconic characters, I must say that the introduction of Ghostface from the Scream franchise is nothing short of exhilarating! The blend of horror icons into this fighting game has always been intriguing, and Ghostface fits right in with his mysterious persona and superhuman resilience.
In September 2023, the first installment of Mortal Kombat was launched, and since then, it has been growing steadily. Similar to other recent Mortal Kombat games, the latest additions have combined classic franchise elements with a variety of popular characters from movies and TV shows. Over the past year, enthusiasts have had access to Homelander from The Boys, Peacemaker from DC, and Omni-Man from Invincible, and it won’t be long before Ghostface from Scream makes an appearance.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be intrigued by Ghostface, a character hailing from the cherished slasher franchise. Each time someone dons the iconic mask, they seem to acquire an uncanny resilience, persistently pursuing their victims despite suffering what would normally be fatal wounds. They taunt with chilling phrases and manage to outwit captors in even the most desperate situations. This supervillain’s strength aligns perfectly with the roster of newcomers I’ve grown fond of.
The trailer for Ghostface doesn’t show much about his in-game abilities, but it does offer a series of chilling scenes to define his character. Since he’s simply “a guy with a knife,” as Johnny Cage mentioned (right before being stabbed). Furthermore, this brief sneak peek also verifies that Roger L. Jackson, like John Cena and J.K. Simmons previously, has returned to voice the masked character once more.
Regarding the mask, the trailer provided a quick yet informative peek at several versions of Ghostface’s famous attire – such as the “Devilface” variant in red, which was last depicted in Behaviour Interactive’s asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight. It’s easy to blink and miss it, but there’s also a hint of a Scorpion-themed alteration reminiscent of one of Mortal Kombat’s earliest designs. However, that’s not the only new mask we see – we also catch a glimpse of a chrome-styled mask, along with a blood-splattered version similar to what you might have witnessed in Halloween two decades ago.
Owners of the Khaos Reigns DLC have the advantage of experiencing the Woodsboro threat ahead of others, as early access begins on November 19th. The general public will have to wait for the complete release a week after, on November 26th. However, Ghostface is not the only fighter joining the battle in this expansion pack.
At San Diego Comic-Con, it was disclosed that Conan the Barbarian and a variant of the T-1000 Terminator are yet to join this wave, bringing two more substantial characters to the Hollywood-themed mural the series has been creating with its DLC since Freddy Kreuger from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” appeared in MK 9.
Instead of Ghostface’s Halloween release being delayed by approximately a month, fans craving their frightful fighting game fix can instead challenge the Towers of Time to unlock terrifying cosmetic skins for characters like Johnny Cage, Li Mei, and Mileena, up until November 2nd.
In the future, we don’t have any information about the characters that will follow after the Khaos Reigns batch has been fully incorporated, but based on past Mortal Kombat games, it is likely that there will be at least one more group of fresh faces to bring change to this new epoch in the game’s unique timeline.
