As a die-hard fan of 80’s cinema, I can wholeheartedly say that The Guest is a modern marvel that effortlessly blends genres while still maintaining a fresh and unique identity. Having grown up during that era, I’ve seen my fair share of movies, and this one truly stands out. The alchemy created by Wingard, Barrett, and the cast is nothing short of magical, crafting an adventure that feels both nostalgic and innovative.
2021 has been a successful year for filmmaker Adam Wingard, Dan Stevens, and Maika Monroe. Adam Wingard’s movie “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” broke the record as the highest-grossing Godzilla film ever made. Meanwhile, Dan Stevens starred in popular genre films like “Abigail”, “Cuckoo”, and “Godzilla x Kong”. Similarly, Maika Monroe appeared in the horror movie “Longlegs”, which has generated a lot of buzz this year. Additionally, it’s been ten years since the release of “The Guest”, a film directed by Adam Wingard and starring both Dan Stevens and Maika Monroe. This milestone has passionate fans eagerly awaiting another installment in the genre-blending and Halloween-themed adventure.
The character named David (Stevens) is seen accompanying the family of a deceased military comrade, providing aid during a difficult period. This man, handsome and charismatic, also proves useful around the household, even captivating the skeptical sister Anna (Monroe). As Anna grows curious about him, she starts to uncover inconsistencies in David’s background, leading to an unexpected whirlwind of events that ultimately expose David’s true identity.
In 2011, filmmakers Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett introduced the comedy-horror film “You’re Next,” which was well-received at the Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest due to its blend of humor and terror. Lionsgate acquired the movie, but as they planned for its release, it seemed like a hidden gem waiting in a vault. It wasn’t until two years later that “You’re Next” saw a theatrical release, even though it didn’t become a box office hit, it did help establish Wingard and Barrett as innovative storytellers within the genre.
The duo came together for “The Guest,” a film that received largely positive feedback from critics following its festival screenings and modest theatrical release, boasting an impressive 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – their best score yet. Interestingly, the movie was influenced by Barrett’s experience as a private investigator, providing him with opportunities to unravel various shocking mysteries among his clients, while Wingard drew inspiration from films like “Halloween” and “The Terminator” for its creation. Despite its initial lack of impact on audiences, it managed to escape the notice of many viewers; however, those who eventually watched it on streaming platforms found it to be a hidden gem that felt like an exciting revelation for newcomers.
The protagonist has garnered praise for numerous aspects, including the captivating presence of Stevens. His portrayal of Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey attracted many viewers, yet it was The Guest that showcased his versatility to a broader audience. Monroe successfully portrayed the cynicism of a young adult who is both skeptical and allured by the enigmatic figure, and her role in the chilling phenomenon It Follows during the same year solidified her as an emerging talent for horror narratives. The rest of the cast, consisting of Brendan Meyer, Sheila Kelley, Leland Orser, and the late Lance Henriksen, collectively provided the delicate balance of warmth and vulnerability required to express the seriousness of their circumstances.
Similar to “You’re Next,” “The Guest” skillfully blends tones and visuals across various genre lines, seamlessly transitioning between sci-fi, horror, thriller, action, and comedy in different scenes. This achievement can be attributed not only to the individual talents of directors Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, as well as the cast, but also to the collective synergy they created during production. The result is an experience that feels both nostalgic for fans of ’80s cinema and uniquely innovative. Furthermore, the film’s soundtrack was composed by Steve Moore from the band Zombi, with additional tracks from Clan of Xymox, Gatekeeper, Survive, and Love and Rockets, all of which enhanced its retro vibe.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but notice the unique allure that “The Guest” holds in October. Unlike other Halloween movies, it breaks free from the conventional imagery of crunchy leaves and gloomy skies, instead, it was filmed in New Mexico. This unconventional approach to the holiday may be why the filmmakers were meticulous about how they wove Halloween into the storyline.
Not only does this film stand out as a modern classic with its overall appeal, but it also becomes a yearly tradition among fans during Halloween, increasing the clamor for a follow-up. With David’s intriguing past and The Guest’s unresolved ending, possibilities for future stories – whether focusing on these characters or set within this universe – remain ripe. Despite their involvement in various other successful projects, Wingard, Barrett, Stevens, and Monroe are consistently questioned about a sequel during publicity tours, as they all hint at their enthusiasm for revisiting the story.
Fans‘ calls for another installment of “The Guest” may not have gone unheard, as hints about a new project were dropped by the creators in 2021 and early 2022. This eventually led to the release of “The Guest 2 (Original Soundtrack)” on April 1, 2022. The album showcases music from directors Wingard and Moore, as well as other contributors. Titles like “The Guest Returns,” “Grim Showdown,” “Carver’s War Machine,” and “David vs. The Splinters of the Cross” suggest that this might be as close as we get to a live-action sequel for now.
Year after year, The Guest gains more followers, and no matter what subsequent projects the film’s cast and crew undertake, they are consistently questioned about expanding this science fiction universe. Fortunately, even if we never receive additional content from the movie, having one captivating story is already a victory, and it’s delightful to have such an unconventional production among our annual Halloween viewings.
The Guest is currently available to rent on digital platforms.
