As a cinephile with a penchant for war films that delve deep into the human condition, I found The Last Front to be a captivating and thought-provoking addition to the genre. Having witnessed countless films set during World War I, it’s rare to come across one that offers a fresh perspective on the conflict, particularly in the context of German-occupied Belgium.
In the style of war films pitting good against evil, The Last Frontage presents a narrative where German soldiers, led by Lieutenant Laurentz (Joe Anderson), forcefully escort Belgian villagers down the streets. When a sniper attacks his troops, Laurentz, portrayed as a ruthless Nazi figure, commands the execution of all prisoners. Viewers will eagerly anticipate a fittingly harsh end for this detestable character, Laurentz.
1914 finds farmer Leonard Lambert (Iain Glen) in German-occupied Belgium, living with his daughter Johanna (Emma Dupont) and son Adrien (James Downie). Adrien is engaged to Louise (Sasha Luss), but her father, a doctor, disapproves of their union due to class differences. In this family dynamic, Maximilian (Philippe Brenninkmeyer), Laurentz’s father and commanding officer, is equally troubled by his son’s reckless behavior and brutal suppression of dissenters, reminiscent of the ruthlessness seen during World War One.
However, as the degraded soldiers advance towards the village, the villagers are thrust into a challenging predicament: fight or flee. This situation often finds them seeking guidance from pacifist farmer Lambert, particularly after he endures a traumatic experience at the hands of Lieutenant Mad Bastard. All these events are building up to a tense confrontation that could potentially lead to Lambert being cast in more serious action roles.
In a skillful manner, writer-director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi manages the final stage exceptionally, despite occasional empty and sometimes superfluous voiceovers. The action sequences are effectively executed, and the actors deliver strong performances throughout. Fresh talent graces the screen, destined for greater success, as is Hayet-Kerknawi himself.
