In a revealing chat, the host of the “Armchair Expert” podcast disclosed that just before he began his 11-year marriage with Kristen Bell, the director of “A Star Is Born” imparted some priceless dating wisdom to him.
In the year 2006, Dax sought advice from Bradley, a friend they both shared with Will Arnett, regarding a turbulent relationship where he frequently felt inferior due to his partner’s higher social standing and wealth compared to him.
During his conversation with Tyler Foggatt from the New Yorker, Dax shared that he would relay an entire argument to him, and Dax mentioned that he would respond, “That would make me feel small and insecure.” Dax continued by saying, “And I realized, ‘Wow, that’s how I feel too.’ It’s not appropriate to say that to a woman.” (People Magazine reported this on Oct. 26)
However, Bradley expressed his dissent, advising his friend to give honesty a try with his ex-girlfriend as he stood little to no risk in the process.
Dax added, “‘It seems like you’re ending things with that girl. Perhaps it would be beneficial to rehearse on her first? Here’s an idea: Express how you feel when she says something specific to you.’
Dax wound up giving the idea a shot and was surprised by the positive outcome.
Initially, the response was one of surprise, as if to say, “This person expresses feelings of insecurity, smallness, and insignificance.” – Parenthood star recalled.
Ultimately, that romance didn’t stand the test of time, but Bradley’s experiment certainly did. In fact, Dax said his lesson on how to “lead with vulnerability” helped him a lot when he first started dating Kristen, with whom he now shares daughters Lincoln, 11, and Delta, 9.
And even now, he encourages others struggling to open up to “practice” sharing their most vulnerable emotions in doomed relationships.
